Molokai vs. Lanai

We are considering a daytrip from Maui to either island and I am interested in hearing others experience with this type of visit. I just read a trip report from DawnCT who described their mule ride, and it sounded really interesting (and scary!)

Have stayed on both islands, would definitely choose Molokai for a day. There is not really anything to do on Lanai except do to the 2 hotels. On Molokai you can visit Fr. Damien's leper colony, go to phallic rock and enjoy the breathtaking views, or do the drive on the NE side of the island up to the waterfalls. The drive along the coast is harrowing to say the least but is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever enjoyed. A "must do" if you have time in Molokai.

Yes, Molokai ... nothing to do on Lanai ... two rather posh places, offering water sports ... but it's not enough to justify the trip.

Have stayed on both islands and agree with the others - go to Molokai. Recommend the tour in Kalaupapa (Father Damien's leper colony). Instead of taking the expensive mule tour, we walked down the mule trail (took 90 minutes with numerous stops for photo taking, to traverse down 1700 foot sea cliff) then flew back to Molokai Airport via Molokai Airlines.

If you do the drive along the NE coast there are a few beach very nice and scenic beach parks along the way. The entire drive is along the coast. Otherwise there is a nice one just a few miles from the town center.
