Hi! I'm looking for great advice & helpful hints about Molokai & Lanai. I will be there in July, & I've already booked a B & B on both islands. I'm a teacher who hasn't won the Texas Lottery, so I don't have the big $$$, but I'll bet there is a lot of wonderful things to see and do even on a shoe-string budget. Please share!

Aloha and welcome Susie. How ironic that you are also visiting these two islnads. It is a very rare itinerary, as many remarked to me while on Molokai. That you are visiting these two islands is very rare and very special.
Ask away any queries, and do share the B&B's you have chosen. I would read up on Kalapapa and Fr Damien and save my pennies to take the mule trip down. It is truly an amazing experience. Other than that, let us know where you are staying and ask away. Oh and you might want to check in at tripadvisor forum. There are a few wonderful experts on both islands posting there.
Hope you enjoyed my report.

Yes, I DID enjoy your report, which prompted me to sign up w/Fodor's! I'm staying @ Hale Malu in Kalae (Molokai) & Dreams Come True (Lanai). I want to see the beauty of the islands & learn the history. I read James Michener's book just to give me a feel for it all.I've checked out all the travel books I could find- but not much on these 2 islands! I'm also going to Mauai for a family reunion. I'll re-read your report! I did a dumb thing though-instead of taking the ferry from Lanai to Maui, I bought Island Air to Maui, which takes me to HNL, then Molokai, THEN to Maui! Non-refundable- so I can't change.

Have any of you Molokai travelers tried walking down instead of riding the mules to Kalaupapa? The price of the mule ride seems as steep as the cliffs! What were your favorite beaches for snorkeling in Molokai and Lanai? Where is a great (but inexpensive) to sample local cuisine? Is it possible to get to Molokai's Kamakou Rain Forest in a car (won't have a Jeep)? Thanks for your advice!

Your accomadations look nice and friendly. It is good that you have use of the kitchen on Molokai, and the cookhouse nearby. Make sure you find out what nights they have local entertainment as it is such a friendly and festive night out. On Lanai you must explore the resorts and make yourself at home on the fabulous sofas bythe fire at the Lodge. Walk the grounds and take it all in the beauty.
Yes, you can hike down rather than take the mules, just be prepared for mule poop thruout the trail. And you must pay for your tour at the bottom of the trail. A visit to the colony is by invitation and only thru the tour.
Didn't even get in the water on Molokai, but Lanai has amazing snorkling. At the beach I'm pretty sure snorkling equipment is only available to guests, so check with you hosts as to if they have any available. If not stop at your local sporting goods store and bring your owwn.
Don't fret about the ferry. You may have saved yourself from seasickness! Our first visit to Lanai it was smooth going, but galeforce winds and waves returning - not fun!!!
Here at fodors go to the search box and type in each island, and old threads will come up. Also, not a lot of action here on those islands so do go to tripadvisors forums.
