MLB...League Championship Series....I'm Hooked!!!!!

A legacy of my recent trip to the West Coast is my newly acquired addiction to baseball.

Our local Pay Tv service is screening every game of the League Championship Play-offs Live, but as most of the games coincide with my working hours, I have had to keep myself abreast of developments with the "ball by ball" desciptions on the MLB web-site.

Can The Giant's take advantage of their 2-1 series lead and force themselves into The World Series? I would have loved to have been at AT&T stadium today to watch the home side topple the Phillies.

The Rangers seem to have the wood on New York, but I am told that one should never write off the Yankees.

Some of the terminology still go's over my head (What's the difference between a line-out and a ground-out) and a few of the rules still escape me, but I'm well and truly hooked.

For your elucidation and enjoyment:

The second link will answer your line vs ground question.

Oh, I missed the question. A groundout is when the ball skips along/hits the ground, is picked up by a fielder and he throws the runner out at the base or tags the runner. A line drive is in caught before it hits the ground, but its not a fly ball or a popup -- it's kind of on a straight line but in the air.

Thanks for the suggested links and explanations.

Just following on the internet now...Giants up 2 zip after 4.

The Yankeess claw one back, back they seemed very lucky. Had a lot less hits but just got them at the right times. It would seem that the best team on the day doesn't always get the chocolates.

I'm hoping on a Texas v Giants World Series. I guess this might not make me popular with all the New Yorkers.

Happily the Yankees won today.

If you're new to the game you may not know that the Yankees have won 27 World Series - this will be # 28 if they do it. They have also been in the playoffs 13 of the past 4 years.

They may not beat Texas- but they never give up. You hvae to drive a stake through their hearts to stop them.

What a great game. Several lead changes and the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. Only 1 more win will take the Giants to the World Series. Will Lincecum start in the next game?

Shanek,
Since you've become a fan of our national past time,on your next trip to the US you have to visit NYC and Yankee Stadium. It's new stadium build near the original historic "House that Ruth Built(Babe Ruth)." The SF Giants started out as the NY Giants,in NYC, and their right across the river from the Yankees.

GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!

I'm in severe turmoil that I will have to miss the second half of tonight's game due to an unavoidable conflict - I'm not sure I'll be able to stand it! I want so much for our Boys in Orange to win it in SF. Thanks for the support from Down Under, Shanek!

hazel, funny story someone just told me about yesterday's game. He left work when the game was 5-5 in the ninth. Got to the BART station, and was "refreshing" the score on his iphone when all of a sudden everyone on the platform erupted in shouts, high fives, the works. The guy next to him then says "God damn it. I made it all the way here not knowing the score because I planned to watch the whole thing when I got home. All I had to do was get on the train and I never would have known". Oh well, at least for his sake, he knows watching it won't be a waste of time

sf7307, That has happened to me so many times!!! Fortunately, as my aussie rules football team tends to lose so many games, it has saved me alot of pain.

Just a question to the stats experts. I originally assumed that a players batting average was purely calculated from times at bat divided by hits. As I am drawn deeper into the game, I have started to realise that it may be a little more complex. How do walks, RBI's and the number of bases taken per hit effect ones average, if at all? Is there a simple explanation?

Looking forward to todays game, just logged onto MLB online and trying to work out when it starts. I am very envious of SF7307, I would love to be there.

Hazel, I missed a friends engagement party once as we were leading at half time against a team we hadn't beaten for 5 years. I just couldn't leave. It turned out that my friends ended up surprising everyone by getting married at the party. I felt like a bit of a heal when I got the "where are you" phone call and I was in the bar at the MCG. We did win the game and I was eventually forgiven!!!

HappyTrvlr, Both Yankee stadium and Fenway Park are on the top of my list for my East Coast Adventure, possibly 2013.

Batting average = base hits divided by "official" at-bats. Official at-bats exclude walks, being hit by the pitch. RBIs (or as my DH likes to say, RsBI) and the number of bases taken do not affect one's batting average.

RBI -- Runs Batted In. Counts unless the reason the run scored was an error. So sometimes you'll hear them say "they didn't give him an RBI", that's why.

Runs can score even on a third out in an inning if there was no force-out and the runner crosses the plate before the tag-out.

Extra bases does count towards one's "slugging percentage". The more total bases you get, the higher your slugging percentage.

Gotta go -- we want to get there early. Cheer us on!!

sf7307,

There is something called an "on-base percentage" (OBP) that factors in all the different possibilities . . . hits, walks, hit by pitch, fielding error, uncaught third strike . . . .
