WWW.mojomag.com is a good site to see what is going on for entertainment in Jackson, as well as dining and museums. If you want to stray a little - to the west about 30-35 minutes is Vicksburg, MS and has the casinos and you might also find a riverboat ride on the Mighty Mississippi. Vicksburg also has some of the old mansions which are very beautiful. You didn't say when you were coming down, but bring comfortable clothes that would do well for warm weather and high humidity as the weather "down here" is unpredictable from one day to the next with temperatures. Enjoy your visit.

Hi, Paul. I lived there for 8 years.
Good restaurants that I miss are: Shapley's (best steaks I've ever had - anywhere); Nick's (great seafood); Fernando's (Mexican); Red, Hot & Blue (BBQ); Cock of the Walk (best catfish - anywhere); and Bravo or Amerigo (for Italian - I prefer Amerigo). All these places are in Northeast Jackson or the reservoir area. Nick's is near downtown.
As for downtown lunch places, definitely try The Elite - it's an institution. Keifer's for Greek food - good gyros - and in cold weather they have great white bean chili. Mr. George's has good sandwiches. The Edison Walthall has a good lunch buffet. Hal & Mal's has good lunch specials. Magundi's has GREAT club sandwiches on homemade batter bread - as does Sterling. Iron Horse Grill downtown offers Mexican food that's okay - but the real draw is the great old building.
Que Sera has good burgers. Walker's Drive Inn is another local institution.
As for local entertainment, there is an art museum that has some decent exhibits from time to time. There's an agricultural museum... and a planetarium.
Vicksburg is nearby - as the previous poster pointed out - and does offer casinos. Natchez is a couple of hours away (if you stay over a week-end or something) and has great antebellum B&B's if that interests you at all and casinos as well. The drive down Hwy. 61 takes you through Port Gibson - the city the "yankees" deemed "too beautiful to burn" during the Civil War. It's particularly pretty in early spring when the flowers are in bloom. New Orleans and Memphis are each 3 hours or so away - in opposite directions - both accessible via train service.

There's a little town named Summit on Interstate 55 between Jackson and New Orleans that has a restaurant called the Golden Hush Puppy. It's worth stopping in for a good catfish dinner, fried green pickles, sweet tea and hush puppies. It's only open on weekends. The town is very small but the Jewish Cemetary there is worth a visit. Ask any local and they can direct you to it.
By the way, in a park close to the fair grounds -- I think it is Pioneer Park --is a recreation of a small Southern town as it would have been in the 30s. Interesting and a fun way to spend an afternoon.
A point of interest. When locals say evening, they mean in the afternoon. Evening is night.
