Scene: SF General Hospital ER
Hapless Tourist: Help me, Doc, I;ve been shot!
Doctor: Where?
Hapless Tourist: In the Mission Doc!

Seriously, how did Jacob know where these gunshot victims came from, are they stamped or something? If they live in the Mission, then they are victims of some other kind of crime, probably not armed robbery. Let's not scare people with ignorance and lies.
Aude, you have the right attitude, travel is a calculated risk, as is living. Let me know when you're in town and I'll buy you a beer at Jacks. Alcohol deaths are so rare here.

As victims of violent crime are brought into the ER at SF General, the circumstances surrounding the incident are recorded (ie: where the shooting happened, etc. It is part of standard procedure.

The Mission is a big section of town. Much of it is safe, hip & fun. Some of it is safe but in a lower income area that's not where most tourists want to hang out. Other parts (16th & Mission @ 2 am) are best avoided and can be unsafe for visitors.

I think the area near Mission Dolores is safe but not central to what most tourists want to see. However, if you like nightclubs, fun bars, coffee shops and great new restaurants it's a good area. It wouldn't be the first spot that comes to mind to recommend to tourists, though.
