ming's jewelry
question for HI experts/locals: from a book on antique jewelry, i saw some interesting made in hawaii vintage jewelry made circa 1940. the name of the jeweler is ming's jewelry and a vendor called "almost antiques" has a website that sells some of ming's pieces. does anyone know if this vendor has a physical store in hawaii? also, does anyone here on this board own any of their pieces? seems like this is popular with those into hawaiiana collectibles. thanks for your replies !

These jewelry pieces were and still are very popular with the locals. It is Chinese themed and different from Hawaiian jewelry.
I have never heard of Almost Antiques. I have seen the store Carats & Karats advertising some Ming's heirlooms.
I even had a friend find some on ebay, but this was several years ago.
You must be careful because local stores sometimes sell stuff that looks like Ming's.
The last store closed in 1999.

Aloha,
I own several Ming's pieces. They are truly beautiful. It is true like all really well liked styles people will try to replicate them. Beware when you purchase that you do so from a reputable dealer. Never heard of "Almost Antiques" but do know that Linda over at Alii Antiques in Kailua usually has some nice pieces. Beware if purchasing on ebay make sure that the Seller has excellent feedback.

escrowmanager,
thanks for your response. i saw "Almost Antiques" from the Warman's Jewelry book i was reading on antique jewelry. i think the owner is Joanne Valentine whose name also appears in the book whenever Almost Antiques is mentioned. i googled ming's jewelry and her website came up. there is a set of jade and pearl in 14k yg brooch & earring on that's listed for $900/set. i sent an email and got a response from Joanne willing to sell the set for $750 incd shipping and ins. the pearls are cultured and 6mm and the jade is green, the milky pale green vs deep green variety, from what i could tell from the picture.
i know you're into antique jewelry, would you mind checking the site (there's a picture of the set there) and tell me how much you might pay for them if buying from your "sources". there's a touring antiques show that'll be here in so. california in the first
Sunday of June, i will check if there's any vendors there dealing in Ming's jewelry. to your point, some certificate and original box (not a guarantee of authenticity, though) is always desirable. i'd appreciate your feedback on this. Thanks.
