I need a few restaurant recommendations for the midtown area. Bistros, smaller places, all price ranges. Prefer French, Italian, American.

Why midtown?

Maybe because midtown Atlanta is so much nicer than downtown?

Or midtown New York is so much more expensive and boring than downtown and uptown?

I'm guessing Patrick is right since mdv asked a more general dining question about Atlanta several weeks ago, so . . .

Italian - Vini Vidi Vici on 14th St. in the IBM tower

American (Southern) - Mary Mac's Tea Room on Ponce de Leon

I'm sure there are those who thought I was being a smartass with my comment, but I had responded to that previous request for Atlanta restaurants so suspected that's what mdv was asking about. Surprisingly other cities have midtowns besides New York, but still it would certainly help if people told us WHERE they are talking about.

Incidentally, mdv posted on the Europe board today asking for updates on the Victoria Hotel, without indicating any city or even country. I think we are supposed to be mindreaders here!

OOps--NYC!

We enjoyed Ultimate Pasta at 57th and 1st last week - a quiet BYOB on the corner, upstairs, nice view, all windows. Very good service and the dish with broccoli and shrimp in a cream sauce was delicious. Wine shop right next door, too.

midtown is a huge area, north, south, east, west. On menupages.com there are probably more than 1000 restaurants in what would be deemed midtown for French, American and Italian.

Jubilee is a small bistro on 54 st. b/w 1st-2nd. They specialize in mussels and frites in umpteen different sauces. It's small and a neighborhood place. They also have a location on the west side in the theater district. (51 b/w 8th-9th).

For American DavidBurke and Donatella is a "hot", expensive but terrific new American on east 61 st. BLT Steak on east 57 st is also "hot" and very good.

Trattoria Dell 'Arte is a fun, good Italian on 7th ave & 56 st. specializing in antipasto but with great thin crust pizza and a mean veal chop parmigiana.

If I keep recommending Cibo someone may accuse me of being shill for the place, but it's just that we ate there again recently and it is fresh in my mind.
Cibo at 767 2nd Ave is a great place. Their prix fixe dinner has got to be one of the best deals in Manhatttan. Nice atmosphere, too, and excellent service. www.cibonyc.com
