Midtown Manhattan to Long Island
Hi,
Two quick questions about taking public transportation to Long Island from midtown Manhattan:
1) Can you take the train or subway to JFK from midtown? how does one do that, what is the cost and how long does it take?
2) can you get to Great Neck from midtwon Manhattan by train or subway? How does one do that, and what is the cost and/or time required?
Thanks very much, in advance, for all of your help.

Hi John
You can't take the subway or train to Kennedy. Probably a shuttle bus from midtown or a cab would be best.
The train does go to Great Neck . It's maybe an hour ride. It would leave from Penn Station or Grand Central Station. Can't remember which, as I haven't lived in NY for many years.

John:
You are better of taking a cab to JFK. If you do take the train, you would have to take the A train going towards Far Rockaway and then transfer to an airport shuttle. Timing might be in excess of an hour.
To get to Great Neck you can take the LIRR from Penn Station. The cost based on the website is...
Peak - $6.25
Off Peak - $4.25
Hope this helps.

John,
If you're looking for the cheapest way to JFK then yes you can take the subway ($1.50). You take any "A" train downtown that says "Rockaway" on it and get off at the Howard Beach stop. There are free shuttle buses waiting to take you to all the terminals. I do it all the time and it averages about 1 1/2 hours travel time total.

John, for Great Neck, go to Penn Station at 7th/8th Avenue and 33rd St. The Long Island Railroad is downstairs. Go to the ticket windows, on the east side of the concourse for tickets. Traditionally trains to Great Neck leave from one of the tracks between 17-21. The ride is about 35 minutes and the fare is $6.25 peak and $4.75 off-peak. For more info you can call (718) 217-LIRR.
