Back from trip. Took yellow taxi from JFK which, coincidentally or not, cost same price as Carmel TO the airport.
Very short taxi line at Sunday around 6:30pm.
Flat rate fare of $52, plus tip.
As always, paid no toll since 59th Street/Queensboro/Ed Koch Bridge is free.
So looks like for me, anyway, it will be Carmel to the airport and taxi on the return home.

I've never thought to ask the cabbie to take the 59th Street/Queensboro/Ed Koch Bridge (can we please settle on a name and stick to it? And don't get me started on the RFK/Triborough issue) instead of the Midtown Tunnel. Thanks for the idea.

FD: They sometimes balk halfheartedly about the bridge (to me it will always just be the 59th Street Bridge!) but they always acceed to the request. And some of them know all kinds of creative ways to get through the Vandam St. area traffic jam. Sometimes they take the Grand Central and go through Astoria onto Crescent Street and right onto the bridge. And you know it is a flat rate, so even if it takes a few minutes more.....
