I understand why people go to Fisherman’s Wharf / Pier 39 area - submarine, aquarium, see the sea lions, honkey tonk etc, or chowder at Boudins, or just to buy a fleece SF hoodie because they are freezing. But I am in no way recommending it. No judgement if they do want to go there - it’s their trip. Tourists like honkey tonk all around the world. Nothing wrong with that.
Nowadays when I take a trip to SF ( once or twice a year for business or to visit family) I will usually go to the Ferry / Market building to dine ( eg Hog Island) or shop (often for bread…), and to Chinatown to eat & shop (for specialty imports at several shops). Or just take long walks along the Embarcadero to inhale the sea air.

Again, I like the ferry building-great place to go for lunch and great bay views. We ended up going to Alcatraz years ago with relatives who were visiting and I actually ended up enjoying it. Golden Gate Park is also lovely and DeYoung museum usually has good exhibitions and a wonderful viewing tower. Another area that can be seen on foot is Chinatown and right next to it, North Beach with some good small Italian coffee places and delis. We like cafe Trieste for the historical ambience plus the famous City Lights bookstore is good for a browse.
Down by Menlo Park, I’ll also put in another vote for visiting Filoli. Beautiful estate with stunning gardens. If you are coming in spring or summer there will be lots of flowers and trees in bloom.
