My son and his GF and two other couples stayed at the Albion River Inn and loved it.

Hmmmm.....Gualala is about an hour and a half south of Mendocino on Hwy 1. Personally, I would not consider it for lodging if my true intent was to perch closer to Mendocino.
"$200/night" + "overlook the ocean" won't go very far in Mendocino proper, so consider
staying 15 mins. north in the Ft. Bragg area.
look at www.fortbragg.com and do some searching.

Check out the Little River Inn -- all rooms overlook the ocean and prices range from about $125 to well over $300. The Bayside rooms are probably one of the best bargains along that part of the coast @ $175 (high season) -- large, floor to ceiling wall of galls, veranda w/ two rocking chairs/side table. Nice on-site restaurant and a good bar.

$175 for an ocean view near Mendocino is a huge bargain IMO.
As razzledazzle says, there would be other choice up in Ft Bragg . . . .
