Memphis to Dallas, what to do?

I will be traveling from Memphis Tn. to Dallas Texas and have an extra day to see the sights along the way. Any suggestions for something interesting to see would be appreciated. If the day would be better spent in the Dallas area, ideas for that would be appreciated too.

You could make a side trip to Hot Springs, Arkansas.

I can't think of any showstoppers along the way. I'd opt for Dallas.

If you enjoy seeing sights of the old south, try routing thru Eureka Springs, it is in north central Arkansas. Or Hot Springs is OK. Those of us who live in the state think it is VERY overrated. On the way to Dallas, in the SW corner of our state you could stop at the diamond mine and hunt yourself up one! As a resident of AR, I suggest getting to Dallas and enjoying your free time there.

I agree with the above post. The only place that might be fun for a stop is the diamond mine, but be warned it's only a muddy field. Though Eureka Springs is probably the nicest tourist spot in Arkansas, it's virtually impossible to route a trip from Memphis to Dallas through there. Hot Springs is nice but there isn't anything to do there that would compare favorably with Dallas.

Susan is correct about the muddy field and Eureka is really out of your way. Do yourself a favor enjoy the drive right thru our little state and enjoy Dallas as previously suggested!

When we lived down that way we went to a nice state park, Petit Jean, north of Little Rock, for some hikes and a stay in a basic state lodge. Seems we went to some other parks in the area, but that's the one I remember from a mountaintop Easter sunrise service.

Kay is correct about Petit Jean it is NW of LR on I 40, thwy rent cabins and have a nice lodge. We did a large family reunion there last fall. there are roads that will lead you to hot springs then back to I 30 from this area. Might let you know I30 is the main road from LR to Dallas, it is always under construction somewhere and the areas that are not being worked on need to be, it is very patchworked with holes and quickie repairs.
