We like the Peabody . . http://www.peabodymemphis.com/
It' one block from Beale but not close to Graceland . . you will need a car or taxi for that

We really enjoyed the Springhill Suites Hotel. It's right on the trolley line so convenient to Beale Street, etc.

We booked a room in the historic Kress Building next to the newer building and had a lovely suite.

Will second staying in the area downtown immediately surrounding the Peabody -- though I didn't actually stay at the Peabody, myself.
There likely still is a free shuttle service that leaves from the Rock and Soul Museum and goes to both Graceland and Sun Studios. Very convenient for anyone without a car in Memphis and staying downtown.

Memphis hass some less than great neighborhoods. The Peabody, Beale Street, and downtown area hotels all are acceptable.
Do not stay out by Graceland or at any of the airport hotels.
Suburban hotels from Germantown to Collierville are all acceptable, but 10 miles from areas of interest.

We go to Memphis fairly often and have stayed in lots of downtown hotels, including the Peabody, Madison, Holiday Inn, Doubletree, Hampton Inn, and our current favorite, the Marriott Residence Inn. All of these places are perfectly acceptable! Though I think the Peabody lobby bar is one of the best people-watching places in the world, we haven't been particularly fond of their rooms, which (to us) seemed small.
The Residence Inn is only a couple of blocks away, has rooms with fully-equipped kitchens, and has very good free breakfasts.
Have fun in Memphis!
