Memorial Weekend in NYC
We won a trip for two to NY and are going this weekend. Here's the basic plan: 1 Broadway show, shopping at Saks for hubby, jewelry shopping on 47th for me, tenement museum or Ellis island, Metropolitan Museum Velasquez/Manet show, Central Park for long walk and picnic, maybe Planetarium show at night before dinner. Will it be possible/safe to take a hansom carriage ride in the park after we go to the Broadway show on Sat. nite? Where should we go afterward for a nightcap/dessert around 11:30 pm Saturday night?
Any recommendations for romantic Sunday night after dinner (something along the lines of Bobby Short cabaret but maybe a little "younger" and hipper)?
Thanks in advance for suggestions!!!

Wow, congratulations!
All of your plans sound great! Especially Saks and the jewelry shopping~
You might want to make a set of just in case it rains plans also, the Planetarium would be good for that, daytime is the same there
The carriage rides are safe but I am not sure if they go that late, after the show will be aroun 10pm.
Dessert after would be fun at Serendipity.
My poor addled brain is blank on the other ideas, there are some great posters here like phillip and howard and michelle, they can tell you all sorts of good ideas
Have fun!

Three of us "girls" are also spending Memorial Day weekend in NYC, and like you I've got every second booked. However, I keep checking weather.com, and it's not looking good. Last year the weather was awful too, and I learned that a rain jacket with a hood is easier to deal with in NYC than an umbrella. Have a great time.

Fleet Week begins tomorrow. All around the area of the Intrepid will be ships from 11 different countries and plenty of service people. Located at 42St and 12th Avenue This is also where you can pick up the Circle Line if you would like.
Might enjoy it!

Maybe you could meet me for drinks while I am apartment hunting

If you really get into the shopping frame of mind, walking down Madison Ave can be fulfilling, Barneys has some interesting jewelry and many top designers are along the street.

I assume you mean the Diamond District? Some of it is closed on Sunday, and some of it is closed on Saturday. Weekdays are the best time to go there.
Chinatown has the other jewelry district (eastern Canal Street & Bowery) and it's open every day. There are many bargains to be found there. My dad bought my mom a nearly perfect diamond there in a gorgeous platinum setting (appraised for much more than what he paid) and they still travel there every year to get their jewelry cleaned and buy gifts for each other. I bought a beautiful 7-opal gold ring at a store on Canal Street for $80 (I really talked them down - you can, especially if you pay in cash).

Mommar--My husband and I spent last weekend in NY and after the theater we went to a FANTASTIC bar on 46th Street between 8th and 9th called Don't Tell Momma. There was a pianist and a microphone and after the shows, members of the Broadway show casts come and sing. The entertainment was absolutely wonderful--and free. Friendly atmosphere and drinks at reasonable prices. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, I agree with above post about Diamond District. Mostly closed on Saturday and Sunday, and since Monday is a holiday it will be closed then as well. And everything is removed from the windows so there is nothing to see. Chinatown has good deals, but if you want to be dazzled, you should also pop into Tiffany on Fifth Ave.
