Maui Snirkel Boat Recommendations Needed
Looking for recent experiences with snorkel boats heading out of Maalea Harbor for Molokini. Two teens, OK swimmers, not afraid of water and Dad. Any recommendations out there, or any companies to avoid.

Hi Jim, let me tell you, noone is a worse typist then I am, LOL. I often cringe an hour later or the next day regarding my posts.
My stepdaughter & husband just arrived in Maui today. They plan on doing lots of "Snirkeling" ;;( so after they get home I will post here about their experiences.

All of them head straight to Molokini with a lunch (grilled chicken breast).The boat ride is the best part. There will be fifteen-plus boats at the crater.
You will anchor close to several other boats.
The variable is the wind. at about 12 to 1 pm the Trade Winds come during most days of the year. Your second snorkle "Turtle Town" will be one of five or so different sites dependant on the winds.
Please book with a company that does not dump their sewage at sea. It is legal, but there is a pump-out station at Maalea if they pay for it.

Thanks LoveItaly. Will appreciate the post when you return home. Your screen name remined me that our first choice destination this summer was to have been Italy. Second trip for us and first for kids. Too much sticker shock from the airfare. Shopped religiously and couldn't find anything for less than $1300/person. 'Course, when your spending $400 for a luau and $250 for a snirkel trip, I actually might end up spending more for the Hawaii trip. I don't remember anything in Italy costing anything like that, except maybe a gondola ride.

There are snuba options on some boats (snorkel + scuba = snorkeling attaching to a tube connected to air on the boat), but I've not heard of snirkel.
Perhaps you can start a new fad.
Just kidding. Are you going to another island? I didn't enjoy Molokini that much. If you are going elsewhere, I might consider spending that $250 elsewhere.

We also were not impressed with Molokini compared to other sites have snorkeled on different islands. By far the best snorkel tour we took was on the Kapalua Kai leaving from in front of Whalers Village. It goes to Honolua Bay, a pod of dolphins followed us to the bay and swam with us the whole time, also lots of turtles. Had to be talked into this excursion and it was awesome, wanted to go again the next day but was sold out.

We drove our own selves to Honolua, arrived earlier than the snorkel cruises and enjoyed the un-crowded situation, the nice walk thru the banyan trees and roosters crowing...costs only alittle gas as we already had the rental car.

Check out www.bluewaterrafting.com . I used them 2 years ago and had a great time. Depending on the tour you settle on, they can take you to places where no other companies travel. They go to the Kanaio Coast to see the sea caves. Just like the picture shows. I would recommend them highly. Just pick your tour. Heading to Maui this Sept. and planning to use them again. Have fun.

After some research, we chose the boat QuickSilver, leaving out out Maalaea Harbor. It is newer and faster than some of the others, allowing it to get to Molokini sooner and then still have time to cruise La Perouse Bay on the south coast. Unfortuately, our time at Molokini was cut short due to jellyfish in the water that day. Still, a nice ride!

For something a bit more adventurous try www.captainsteves.com/ trip to Lanai. We did this with our two teen boys and had a blast. Took the deluxe tour, lots of dolphins, turtles, several snorkel stops around Lanai. Boat ride to and from part of the fun. As opposed to Molokini no other boats around for the most part. Agree with above about Honolua Bay, great spot, but drive there and arrive early.
