Jerry, if, by "value", you mean a restaurant where the dining experience is worth every penny you spend, even though it's expensive, then I highly recommend Girard's in Lahaina. Outstanding food and service and very romantic.

Jerry, I would highly recommend Nick's Fishmarket at the KeaLani Hotel in Wailea, David Pauls in Lahaina and finally Roys or Roy's Nicolina in Kahana. All are at the high end of the price scale but are by far the best restaurants on Maui IMHO

Jerry,
One of the best meals I had was at the Maalaea Waterfront. Request a table outside by the bay. This is a don't miss!

We go to Wailea 2X a year. So we love the place! Check out the Maui Prince at the end of the road in Wailea. Both the Japanese restaurant and the main dining room (gourmet at not inflated prices)are excellent depending on your tastes. And they are low key and not over priced unlike so many others.

Just got back from Maui on Wednesday, 10/24, from our 10-day honeymoon. We did just about everything! We drove around the island to Hana (very beautiful), saw the 7 sacred pools, did the biking trip down Haleakala, snorkled on Molokini as well as Lani, shopped in Kiehe; Front street Lahaina; as well as in Hana, ate at a different restaurant every night (the best meal we had was at Erik's Seafood Grotto in Kapaula), we stayed at the Hyatt Regincy on Kanapali Beach (perfect area in my opinion), visited other resorts such as the Grand Wailea, Sheration, Marriott, also had a chance to snorkle at the Sheraton at Black Rock (just as nice as Molokni!) saw lots of fish, squids, manta rays and sea turtles! If you have any questions, please e-mail me!

Loved Mama's Fish House....amazing, romantic, about $100 for two people but worth every penny

Also liked Lahaina Cooler's on a side street in Lahaina...very delicious

Longhi's was ok but I was not crazy about the spoken menu..."Italian" food was not my idea of a good meal in Hawaii

The Maui Prince in Makena has the most awesome Sunday Brunch...even the locals frequent it.

Definitely go to Sarrentos in Wailea. It was the best place we've ever eaten--and we've eaten at many upscale restaurants in LA. The food was incredible and the service could not have been any better. The concierge at the Four Seasons gushed so much over it that I was sceptical that she was getting some kind of a kick-back from the restaurant. But when we got there it was amazing. IN the bathroom another woman said, "Isn't this restaurant just PERFECT?" and I had to agree! Enjoy! We got the island sea bass--amazing!

i love sheila's attitude--so thrilled w/ the restaurant that two strangers raved about it in the bathroom! i hope all my trips have moments like that.

that nails it for me--sarrento's goes on my list for someday-on-maui--but my recommendation for value and romance is mama's fish house in paia, as a previous poster mentioned. as i recall, entrees top out at $28-$35 w/ starch and veggies included. all fish is fresh off boats commissioned by the restaurant. best mahi i've ever had, and i live in hawaii. time to go is just before sunset, so u can get a view of the coconut grove, beach and crashing waves, just before the tiki torches come on and all u see is a black night sky.

Just returned. Mama's fishhouse was definitely romantic and worth the $$. We also liked Roy's Kahana. Not quiet/peaceful, but good food & fun setting. Ate at Girard's in Lahaina. It was OK, but not as good as the other 2, for less $$ (maybe I'm just not that into french cooking). We also enjoyed Hula Grill for fun... cheap (relatively) & fun. I've heard good things about the waterfront in Maalea. And in a local paper, they list a key saying that you must recite in order to get a buy one entree/ get one free for their anniversary special. Seemed like an excellent deal. We just ran out of time... Jodi

As posted on another thread, in Oct 2000, we liked Erik's Seafood Grotto in Kahana tho' the view isn't anything special. Food great as was the service.
Longhi's was a disappointment, didn't live up to expectations. Hoping to go spring 2002 so we'll see how they've changed !
Have Fun

When we were in Maui last year we stayed at the Four Seasons. Had dinner our last evening at their fancy restaurant. Sat outside overlooking the ocean. It was romantic and the food was delicious.

Another vote for Mama's. If cost is a concern go for lunch and sit by the window. Great fish and wonderful view too. Also love Haliimaile General Store, it is nice to arrive in the pitch black night and see the lights as you approach by car. I always enjoy to walk up to the porch from where it is a quiet night, then open the door to happy music and voices and good food.

We found the food at Honokowai Okazuya and Deli to be equal to that at Mama's Fish House. In fact the owner and chef used to work at Mama's. No ambiance, though. Just great food and prices. Get it and carry it to the Honokowai Beach Park across the street or back to your lanai. I had the Ono and it was to die for.

I have benn fortunate to visit Maui many times in the recent years. Here's my list of "don't miss" places:

1)Mama's
2)Roy's )either location, new location in Kehei)
3)Joe's Bar & Grill
4)Sea Watch

Sarento's just opened when I last visited. Sounds great! I was at the old Restaurant (Carreli's) many times. A truly magical location a stone's throw from the water!
