Planning a trip to Maui in March for me and my girlfriend (no kids) and unsure where to stay. I'm trying to decide between Maui Sheraton (Kaanapali) or the 4 Seasons or Fairmont (Wailea). Which beaches are better? Is the wind a lot worse at Wailea? Is snorkeling good at Wailea? It sounds like with all the extra charges at Sheraton the rates would be pretty similar. Any additional info or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

You're struggling with a decision between the Sheraton and the Four Seasons? You're kidding right?

Regardless of any extra charges the FS is so much nicer price is not a relevant issue.
KL has bigger rooms and better pools than FS, but the quality of the rooms and the service is better at the FS IMO.
KL is a better bargain, but not better quality.
I like Wailea a lot better than Kaanapali, which feels too much like mini-Los Angeles to me...(assuming you're going to relax rather than to cruise for 20-somethings and carouse).

Been to both Kaanapali and Wailea- for beauty and romance, Wailea all the way! )I don't remember it being windy at all!)

I have lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and can vouch most sincerely that Kaanapali is absolutely NOTHING like Los Angeles.

Doesn't the big L up the mountain stand for Los Angeles?

Wailea is much prettier resort but Kaanapali has Lahaina and its nightlife.

We stayed in Wailea on our honeymoon. The resorts there were fab, the beach was wonderful and much more private than Kaanapali (resort users only). The Wailea area is much more upscale. But, the only things to do are at the resorts. If you want any other nightlife or entertainment then Kaanapali is your best bet.
Regardless of where you stay, don't miss Warren and Annabels magic/comedy show!

I loved Wailea. When we drove through Kaanapali I felt like I was in South Florida: high rises up the wazoo. Wailea is gorgeous. The beaches are beautiful. Snorkeling, swimming, bodysurfing, boogie boarding: it's all possible. A walking path connects all the hotels and the Shops at Wailea.
Can't wait to go back!

South Florida, Los Angeles....take your pick. How about 'mini-Honolulu'? The point is that many first timers to Maui (who haven't read much or talked to others who have been there) are disappointed by the appearance and vibe of Kaanapali IF they were expecting tranquil, unspoiled island beauty.
And people who have been visiting Maui for 25 years remember Kaanapali when it still offered the best of both worlds.
Now even Wailea is getting to look and feel like Southern California.
