I am going to Maui this summer either in early June or Mid-August. Ive got a ton of Starwood points saved up from business purchases and can stay for free at the Sheraton, Westin, or Kapalua Bay. I was leaning towards the Westin but then read the reviews on this site and many were not too favorable. We want a nice view and quiet beach to relax on but not too crazy with lots of kids. That said, we don't want to be too far away from all the action. I have only been to Hawaii once and it was 12 years ago when I was about 10 so I dont remember much. What can we expect in terms of crowds around those times? Im sure it will be busy but busy like Disneyland in the summer or not so much?

I've read good things about all three, but it depends on what you are looking for. The Sheraton would probably be your best bet... it's got a great beach with some of the best snorkeling on the island... and it's kind of low key but still in Kaanapali and near Lahaina. The Westin seems to be the choice for people wanting a great pool system... which,especially if you are going in August, will mean a ton of families and kids.

The Kapalua is the nicest of the three and seems to be the most laid back, but also a bit out of the way, if I'm not mistaken, if you want some action. I believe it is a little farther north than Kaanapali.

I think that Kapalua is the best of the three for you. I like the Sheraton but the beach there is very popular and will be crowded. Kapalua is more secluded and upscale. It is about a 10-15 minute drive to Lahina.

If you want peace and quiet in a very beautiful and serene setting you should stay in Kapalua. Very green and lush part of the island with breathtaking beaches that are quiet and private right on the grounds of the luxury resorts-Kapalua Bay and the Ritz Carlton. Only 15 minutes from the action of Kanaapali and Lahainia(very nice drive down the highway on the coast).Lots of great restaurants and golf, tennis and spa services at both resorts.When we were there in Dec (at the Ritz but the Kapalua Bay Hotel looked fab too) there were no kids in sight.I'm sure it's much busier in summer, however, Kapalua didn't seem like a place where too many families go.Have a great trip!!

I stayed at Kapalua Bay about 1 1/2 yrs ago and the drive took about a half of an hour to get to Lahaina. Traffic is really bad. But it is definitely the nicest of the three choices. The Westin is very family oriented. The views from the Kap bay were amazing, among the best on the island.

P.S., kid wise, that is the worst time to go. There will be many kids at any hotel you choose. If that is a big factor Sept is a much better time to go. Have fun!

Thanks for all the input! I think we are pretty set on kapalua bay now. Im sure the summer months are the worst in terms of crowds but its the only time we could get away from school and jobs. It probably doesnt matter much but we are going to stay from a Wednesday to a Wednesday, will crowds be any lighter on weekdays as opposed to weekends?

The sheraton was pretty awesome, great pool, great food, great diving support.

Just a note---it won't take a half hour to get to Lahaina.

Sheraton no doubt, great snorkleing, beach is great ,shops ,grills, nite life. nick
