Don't know about the full moon effect but we were suprised two days in a row at about the same time by Jellyfish.
It was in November in the south area of Wailea. I was lucky but my wife and brother in law had some painful stings. We were told this is quite unusual. It was about one in the afternoon and they seemed to come in with the tide. There were quite a few washing up on the beach too at that time.
We were told they were portugese men of war but they were very small - less than the size of a dime - with 'tentacles' an inch and a half long or so.
Have been in the water around Maui many times since with no problems.
