Maui & Kauai ranches/stables.

Can someone recommend some entry level ranches or stables for adults on either Maui or Kauai? Which island has better trails? Much appreciated.

I used CJM stables on Kauai which is about 3 miles down the raod from the Hyatt near Poipu. Their horses were excellent and well maintained. The staff spent time matching rider with the horse and the groups were 8 or less. The trails were along the beach and the guide's narrative was quite informative. It was the hightlight of our trip last summer.

Sorry, did not ride on Maui.

My husband went on a trail ride here on Maui for an executive retreat last year. I don't think any of them had gone near a horse, let alone ridden one, in decades! They went to Mendes Ranch and all of them (11 men, 2 women) had a great time. I've also heard good thing about Pony Express upcountry but no first hand experience. Mendes is close to the coast, Pony Express is upcountry (ie half-way up Haleakala)

I used Makena Stables when I was there two years ago and I would go there again. Excellent horses, very well cared for. Small groups. The trails are up the side of Haleakala to the last Cinder Cone on the side. Great views. Very nice owners. Their horses are used in movies, commercials and TV.

Even though we own horses here in Florida, we yearn to return to Makena Stables on the southeast coast of Maui for a daylong ride! The owners and horses are wonderful and it's right down the road from some of the best snorkeling in Maui as well!
