Marvelous Maui... A Sloth's Skewed View

I'm writing from the lovely island of Maui, Hawaii, where we have been recovering from today's long attempted excursion to Hana. For those of you who have been here, the drive to Hana is considered a must. There are gorgeous black sand beaches, magnificent waterfalls, local stores and attractions... which we missed. Unfortunately, I (aka: Mario Andretti, M.D.) was not able to tolerate the drive past mile 8. We were both green and decided that the gastrointestinal costs of the remaining miles were not worth the effort. However, all was not lost. After touring around, we found a resting spot, which turned out to be a lovely little farm on route 36. At the end of the road was this unbelievable cliff with a rock landing. (As would be expected from Ansel Adams, M.D., the pictures will follow when we return to the mainland) To our surprise, there were also seven cows (3 calves) that greeted us kind Polynesian hospitality. Little did they know, we nicknamed them as they came over to greet us: Dinner, Burger, Snack, Tasty... To support their existence on this planet, we had sushi tonight at Sansei in North Maui. LONG LIVE THE COW!!! The fish was so fresh we thought it was going to jump off of our plates.

As for the rest of our trip, every day has started with a breakfast of fresh local fresh fruits (with the exception of anything orange for me). OK, that's a lie. I usually sleep in, while the morning owl gets up at the crack of... to enjoy the lovely hours of the day that occur before 10 a.m. Yesterday (I think that was Tuesday), we drove north past Napili and the Ritz Carlton. We hung-10 with over 75 surfers on a cliff by Kahakuola Bay and watched them ride the incredible waves. Dinner was at Malo, a small tapas joint on Front Street overlooking the ocean. The Mediterranean quartet appetizer was divine!

Monday, we treated ourselves to ocean-side massages and laziness by the pool. Sunday was pretty much the same, without the massages. We ventured off of the resort's boundaries for a quiet lunch at Longhi's on Front Street and a peaceful dinner at David Paul's Lahina Grill, which I highly recommend! Later that evening, we took in an astronomy show at our hotel. We saw Saturn, Orion’s belt, Sirius, the North Star… There was minimal light pollution and other than a bit of awkwardness from walking atop of a 10-story building in the dark, it was fascinating. My inner-nerd surfaced!

Sunday, we drove to Wailei to see the shops and take in the scenery. (I was highly amused by the sign along the way that read "Puunene") After buying absolutely nothing, we headed over to the Four Seasons Resort for a tasty dinner at Spago (courtesy of Wolfgang Puck) There was a special of an Opakapaka fish cooked to perfection with a medley of sautéed vegetables and sticky rice. Simply splendid. Although, this was easily out done by the dessert, which consisted of a heavenly warm chocolate cake partnered with a simple vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmmmmmmm!

As for the remainder of our stay here in paradise, we have snorkeling, the aquarium, a second dinner at Sansei, possibly a jaunt to the botanical gardens, and I'm sure more laziness and sloth-like behavior to partake of at the pool/ocean/hot tub. I’ll write more of the plane and rental car experience, as well as some info on our hotel digs, in my next entry. Until then, I hope this finds everyone well and not frozen under 18" of snow and ice!

LOL...I agree on the road to Hana! It is gorgeous but I hated every second of it! I left claw marks in the roll bar of our jeep.

Hey, what's funny about Puunene?

If you go down Puunene road, around back behind the mill, you'll find the Maui Public Library's used bookstore. Great place to pick up cheap reading material for those lazy Maui days.

Was the astronomy show a Tour of the Stars at the Hyatt? If so, I've enjoyed that as well. Amazing to see the rings around Saturn while standing on a roof in Maui!

I dunno, for some reason, I - the roller coaster avoider - had no problem with the road to Hana nor the northern Pali coast road. I loved every minute!

Oh contraire! I did not drive. My daydreamer, cross the line or run off the road DH did!
Somehow, he found it within himself to pay more attention than usual! I sat back, let the top down and snapped pictures all the way!

I'm usually not a car-sick kind of gal, but let me tell you... I was the driver and I was making myself green and queasy. Bring the Pebto and make sure you have a few of the bags from the plane!

As for puunene, it means something else in a southeast Asian language. I just got a chuckle out of it. 'Nuff said... I want to keep this PG!
