Better to go by car than to walk!
Seriously, what exactly do you want to know? What kind of advice are you seeking?
Normally, people picking up passengers drive to the airport, park in the short term lot near the arrival terminal for the airline the incoming passenger(s) is/are flying on and then proceed to the area just outside the baggage claim area for that flight (it will be posted on the Arrivals Monitor inside the terminal) to meet the passenger.
Since that's all common sense I again ask, what advice are you seeking?

I assume you are coming from Marathon Key (not Marathon, Texas) - if so, you probably already know it's about 112 miles to the airport. For normal driving conditions figure about 2:30 door to door. You don't say what time you have to be there but try to avoid traveling in rush hour if at all possible. If not allow extra time. Listen to the Miami Traffic report on the radio the day you are traveling to see if there are any "road delays" on your planned route of travel.
Whenever we meet people at the airport or when someone is meeting us we always have each others cell phone number. That way when the person deplanes they can call you so you can easily meet up.
You can map out your route to/from the airport on Mapquest or Google Maps.

I would only say that I have had fewer delays on Old Dixie Highway/Card Sound Road than on 1, even though it is farther. That may only have been my luck, though. An accident on either means you are hosed. Cell phone is critical when you are coming that far.
