Are you talking about Jack Finney's "Time And Again"? I remembering loving it, and very definitely it's about time travel - just couldn't remember if the Dakota was in it.

Yes! That's it; I've been wanting to read it but couldn't remember the title. It seems to get a lot of mixed reviews (what doesn't?), but as a former UWS'er, I'm pretty interested in the neighborhood descriptions. Again, thanks!

Did anyone see the musical version of it in NYC last February? Was it any good?

there was a musical version??? Where was it staged? There was an article in the Times about 2 sundays ago about the fact that it's never been made into a movie (though similarly themed movies abound) but that Robert Redford has been talking about it for years. This seems like one of those things better left as a book--love looking at the old
photos as I'm reading.

It was produced as a musical by Manhattan Theatre Club in Feb 2001. I didn't get a chance to see it because it was on a limited 6 week run.

Saw the show at MTC, wasn't that good. You missed nothing. However, there was a movie made about this. It was on TV about 5 years ago. Hasn't been on since. I think the woman in it was Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio or something (Ted Danson's wife). Anyway, loved the book. In fact, I read it twice.

The time travel movie with Mary Steenburgen had a slightly different title, something like "Time after Time", and a completely different plot. In that one, Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells (!) travels to 1990 America. One memorable scene had the 19th century author revealing to modern Mary, "I believe in---Free Love," expecting to shock her. She replies, "Free love!" rather nostalgically, "I haven't heard that expression since eighth grade!" Then she goes on to assure him that she doesn't sleep around, only gets it on if she really likes a guy...the expression on his face was priceless.

Just a note, if you thought "Time and Again" was a great book, as I did, you'll be sorely disappointed by the sequel "From Time to Time." I read the first 100 pages and stopped because it lacked the pacing and interesting plot of the original.
