Manhattan to JFK/Long Island by Rail

Hi, all,

Two questions related to subway or rail logistics between midtown Manhattan and Long Island:

1) Is it possible and relatively easy to get from JFK to midtown Manhattan? (We arrive at 7:30pm and have a hotel in midtown on 57th Street) How does one do this and what is the cost? Is it worth the hassle?

2) Similarly, how easy is it to get from midtown Manhattan to Great Neck (LIRR? Subway)? Again, what is the cost and/or time required? Would you recommend another means of getting there?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Apologies for the dual posting. I posted my initial inquiry when the web site was not showing any threads and it looked like mine had not taken -- apparently, with some delay, it has.

Thanks.

The most convenient way from JFk to Manhattan is by taxi. Rate is fixed at $35. With a tip and toll ($3.50 if driver uses a toll facility) will be between $40 and $45. There is a shuttle that will take you from airport to hotel for around $32 or $34. Airport bus to Manhattan terminal and taxi to hotel would cost around $30. You can find exact bus costs and all transportation options at www.panynj.gov. You could also do this by subway at a cost of $1.50 per person - not the most convenient way to go.
Manhattan to Great Neck - Long Island Railroad from Penn Station (32nd and 7th Ave.) Service is frequent and I don't know the cost but I suspect it is between $5 an $10 = time of day traveling is a factor.

Take the shuttle bus ( http://www.nyairportservice.com/jfk_manhattan.html ), it will cost you $13 1way or $23 r/t between JFK and Penn, GCT, or PA Bus, or $15 1way/$23 r/t to many Manhattan hotels. Figure 1.25 hr to GCT, the first Manhatten stop the shuttle makes. Lots of room for your luggage, I'vc taken the NY Airport Service many times before I started using public transportation. (no x in my e-ddress)

If you have three people sharing a cab, I'd go with the taxi. It's more convenient and the number of people offset the expense.

I love it! 3 people sharing the cost? No, one person paying for the 3 people! Same difference
