Manhattan, breakfast options?
Is it possible to have sitting down, -like it was possible in coffee shops years back, -
an American breakfast for a reasonable amount of money>?
We shall be staying in the Shelburne Hotel ( Lexington and 47).
Breakfast is important to our family, and we would like to have
nothing fancy , may be one egg or cereal , toast, juice, coffee .
Years back, instead of having breakfast at the hotel we took
our family to one of many coffee shops and it worked
fine for us. Now it seems to me that the options are either fancy
places or take outs or places .
If this is possible how much will it cost......>?

Thank you. I made a mistake the hotel Shelburne is on Lexington and 37 th.
My question is do coffee shops still exist in New York? Everything I read in guide
books and forums is about either fancy places or take away places. ?
I am a little confused. Have things changed that much...?It seems a trivial
question but we are a family of 8....thank you again.

yes, they do exist...the Edison that I cited above is just one...The Red Flame on the eastside on 44th is another.. suggest that you go to Zagat or Yelp for New York City and put coffee shop in the search engine...

Absolutely. Scotty's is a popular one near that hotel. http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/scottys/ Menupages is a great place to do restaurant research. Pick west 30's and west 40's and diners (or breakfast).

There are diners/coffee shops along Third Ave in that neighborhood. Sarge's Deli at Third bet 36th and 37th offers breakfast as well as sandwiches. Moonstruck is a local chain of diners at Third and 31st. A little further downtown is Sunflower at Third at 26th or 27th. Two eggs any style usually starts around $5 and includes toast and hash browns, perhaps coffee or juice.
Here are a few links to give you an idea. Some are delivery menus so may not show every option.

We visited NYC in January and had breakfast every morning at the NY Luncheonette (135 E. 50th Street - basically 50th and Lexington a couple of doors down (east) from The Benjamin Hotel). It is a typical diner type restaurant - nothing fancy, but very good sit down breakfast. You can sit at the counter or at a table. There was always a small line at the door and the place was filled with regulars who the owner would greet by name. The menu is huge - pretty much anything you would want for breakfast.

As I mentioned in your other thread, my friends' apt is nearby. We used to go to Sarge's all the time when we were young. I can't stomach the greasy food anymore now! It's a great place for your typical diner-style, greasy spoon breakfast.

Scotty's is about 2 blocks from the Shelburne on the opposite side of Lexington. There's also a deli across from Scotty's if you don't want to sit down and just want to bring something back to your hotel one morning. There's also a Starbucks that sells breakfast items including good oatmeal and it has plenty of seats (its on the corner of 39th, I believe.

Sorry ... I pressed Post too soon.
I forgot Bloom's which is on the corner of 40th and Lex. But it's more expensive (and it has more deli-style items, like Sarge's). Sarge's is a little further than Scotty's since it's on 3rd Ave., and it's also more expensive. And there's a Korean deli at 41st and it has seats and will make eggs to order in the morning. Finally, you can get muffins and breakfast wraps at Pret a Manger, which is cater-corner from the Korean deli on Lex. I like their coffee, but it's a bit more expensive for muffins, which are delicious.
