It's been decades since I was last at Mammoth but the place I found most intriguing to hike is Hot Creek, across 395. If you're a birder, swallows nest above the creek & are fun to watch, though that may be seasonal. Google "hot creek" lots of info & photos online.

Same here -- been years since I've done Mammoth (my more recent 395 jaunts have been some combination of Tahoe, Bodie, Tioga Pass, Death Valley) But For hiking info I usually refer to All Trails which I find is more 'honest' about hikes/trails than some others. Here is their list for the Mammouth Lakes area. https://www.alltrails.com/us/california/mammoth-lakes

My cousin goes to Mammoth almost every year and they usually stay here https://www.1849mountainrentals.com/...wbird-rentals/ But I think that is mostly because of its location close to the Lodge and gondola. (I've not stayed there myself)

There are simply too many great hiking trails to even begin rating them or recommend one/two over others.

We have a mini family reunion at June Lake every September. We like its low key vibe compared to Mammoth, but there's no doubt Mammoth has more variety in most categories... Hiking, lodging, dining (no contest, Mammoth wins), mountain biking on the ski hill... June has the advantage of being closer to Tuolumne Meadows (loads of trails and lakes, many not requiring you enter Yosemite NP), Mono Lake (ancient lake, tufa towers, interesting ecosystem), Panum Crater, Bodie ghost town, and other day excursions to places like Lundy Lake, Virginia Lakes... With only 3-4 days, you'll have to be very selective in your activities wherever you stay.

Destinations like Mammoth and June became very popular getaways/stayaways during the pandemic and will be saturated with visitors. Sights like Obsedian Dome near-ish to June and Devil's Postpile near-ish to Mammoth will probably be overrun. In the past, you had to take a shuttle to see Devil's Postpile, but the shuttle was suspended during the pandemic. It should resume, but who knows when...

You need to look for lodging NOW. I would nail down lodging first and then decide what you'll do from there. If June Lake sounds appealing, look at the Double Eagle Resort. They have large hotel rooms and several cabins, although you may be too late to secure one or more of the cabins. The resort has an indoor pool, spa, gym and restaurant, but I don't know what amenities will have re-opened by July.

Out of curiosity, which direction are you coming from?

Bodie Historical State Park and Devil's Postpile National Monument come to mind as excursions.

Wow, thank you so much for this great information. As of now, I have a reservation at a lodge in Mammoth, but will definitely look into Snake. We will be coming from Lake Tahoe after a few days there.

Coming from Lake Tahoe, you'd have time to make a stop or two on your way south. If you're continuing south on 395 after your time in Mammoth/June, there are many interesting stops. Between June and Mammoth, the Mammoth Scenic Loop road is a nice drive.

If you stay in June, try to have dinner at the Mono Inn (north of Lee Vining) around sunset.

If you stay in Mammoth, one of our favorite splurgy dinner options is the restaurant at nearby Convict Lake.

Forgot to mention... If you decide to hike in Tuolumne Meadows or in the Tioga Pass (Hwy. 120) area, you can pick up lunch or snacks at the Whoa Nellie Deli which is adjacent to the Mobil gas station at the intersection of 395 and 120 in Lee Vining.

Devil's Postpile should be open for your stay. It used to be if you got up there really early, you could drive in rather than take the shuttle bus. Minaret Vista is a good place to look for Clark's Nutcracker.

Mono may be too hot for hiking but your can drive around and scope from a few spots.

You can also drive up to Aspendell and look for Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch and other high-altitude birds at different feeders around town. Virginia Lakes also had feeders but I haven't been up there in quite a while.

We went to Mammoth Lakes a couple of years ago in July and skied if you can believe that. The nicest hotel in the area is the Westin, it's right across the street from alot of shops and restaurants within the village. That is where I recommend you stay.
