More like hotel/condo/cabin, but not too "rustic." Some cabins have minimum stay req's though, and we'll only be there three or four nights. Mammoth town and June lakes are two areas I'm familiar with, but I'm open to suggestions.

Most of the lodging in June Lake should not rate more than 2 diamonds from AAA. The only exception would be the Double Eagle Resort. www.doubleeagleresort.com

Three or four nights in the fall are plenty to even get a condo. Prices are low due to the off season.
We stay in a condo on the golf course, Mammoth Lakes in the summer or at Juniper Springs. We like both of them. I get a really good deal from a private party for the Juniper Springs condo. It's a hotel type property but each unit has a kitchen and a licing and dining area. 3 jacuzzis and a heated pool.
You could also stay at the Village.
My DH looked in on the Tamarack Lodge up at the lakes area and said they were terrific. Here's a link:

The Westin Monache is now in Mammoth, we stayed there this past weekend and it is a beautiful resort with many nice amenities in a fantastic location. My son stayed 4 nights at the Tamarack Lodge last week, we joined him for dinner at the Lakefront restaurant there which was fantastic. French Onion Soup, Elk Medallions au Poivre, Spinach Salad and the Fillet Mignon were all of the highest quality. We loved Mammoth, this was our first time here but not our last! ***kim***
