Mama's Fish House - Maui

I may be chastised for this, but am I the only one that thought Mama's Fish House was a bit overrated? Don't get me wrong - it was good and the restaurant, itself, was very cool, but it just didn't blow me away.

Several people told me it was the best restaurant in all of the islands - I guess I just had high expectations?

I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts…

Just do a search--you'll find plenty of people (very recent) who agree totally.

That is, that Mama's is overrated, overpriced, and overhyped.

Thought the food was quiet good (not great) with a very nice presentation. Thought the view (we were there at sunset) was very nice (again, not great). Thought the ambience was terrific however, with a great South Seas feel.

Worth the money? That depends on your income bracket and what you are used to spending. I wouldn't break the bank for it, but if you are able to splurge for an expensive restaurant every once and a while without feeling guilty, then Mama's is one to consider.

I agree with you! It was overrated. Great location and ambiance. And the Mai Tai was great, although $10.- (and that was in 2000!) is a bit much, LOL. You sure don't get much for your money there. Downtown Paia or Makawao which is close to there, has better bang for the buck.

I definitely felt that it was over rated. We had lunch there last February and I was not impressed with the food or service. The view was nice, but many restaurants in Maui have great views. With so many excellent restaurants in Maui, we won't be returning to Mamas.

We had our anniversary dinner at Mama's Fish House. Reserved a nice table by the window nice and early so we could still see the view before it got dark.

For food, if 10 is the best food I have ever eaten in my life, and 0 is the worst, I would give Mama's food a "7".

For romantic atmosphere, where 10 is the most romantic restaurant I have ever been to, and 0 really sucks, I would give Mama's a 9.

For location, right on an exquisite little beach, see it before it gets dark, I would give Mama's a "10", for one of the best settings I have ever seen for a restaurant.

For the $10 Mai-Tai, I would like to tell you that it was my first Mai-Tai, and it will be my last, I didn't like it!

I hope this helps somebody who is considering Mama's. I think it is a good choice for a special occasion where romance is important. You absolutely must have a reservation or you will be sitting in the bar and still paying top dollar.

This post will soon be deleted. Mama's is an icon on this board. Say something bad about it and you will be gone.

My son had lunch at Mama's today. Said there was nothing on the menu for less than $38. Think I would just feel gouged. Granted the food is usually good and a very nice view, but not worth that kind of money to me.
