Yep, there is definitely a feast for the eyes at the Feast of Lele...you'll love it.

TravelDiva, it sucks to be 31 and desperately holding onto your 20-something body. I finally let go and became more relaxed when my beautiful daughters were 16 and 17, and I realized, there's no way you can ever compete with that fresh and young look you have at 16!

So you gotta find a different way of measuring who you are. Now that I'm almost 50 I'm discovering a new answer for each decade! This is a really fun year when we're doing more travelling than ever.

O.K.! O.K.! I get It! No makeup! Just don't cover your mouth and whisper about that short oldish lady with her floppy hair and no eyes when I come into the restaurant or shop!
And as for the "sunkist skin"...at my age it becomes sun spots and purple veins! I held onto my 40ish figure as long as possible (forget about that 20ish one...). So you 30ish young things can just go complain somewhere else! ...just teas'in!
Thanks for the responses! OSB.

LOL...I know, I was talking with BF the other day and I was saying (just saying, not complaining) that this year has truly been the first year that I feel any older (not "old", just different). He of course think I'm nuts cuz he thinks I look better now than ever.

Agree completely, Melissa5 about that 16-year-old glow. But us experienced gals got our own special stuff that's worth strutting too! I'll have to wear make up at my brother's wedding...but other than that. It's au naturel. (I'll even post my pics for all of Fodors to see...)

Southern Belle- Wait just a minute! Let's not be too hasty now. As someone who would be happy to see even a 40-ish body again I want my say!!

I *always* wear the same make-up whether at home or in the islands. I'm off to Oahu one week from today.

I don't snorkel or get my hair wet in the pool so that's not an issue. For touring and shopping I wear concealer, eye pencil, lipstick, blush, mascara. Definitely hair clips or ponytail holder and sometimes a hat. But most important add good sunblock especially for your face.

aloha

Suze, you really go to Hawaii without snorkeling or getting your hair wet? Isn't that illegal in Hawaii? Try taking the plunge and getting all wet sometime...it's really refreshing and relaxing. I almost felt like a mermaid while snorkeling!

When I was in Hawaii I put on a waterproof mascara and a little lip stick, cover girl extended stay 8hour or something like that lasts all day. Comes in a box with lip color and a seperate gloss. The hair was stuck in a clip. Make up was the least of my worries, after the beach, hiking, etc.... the deoderant was pretty much gone, so I did keep my deoderant with me at all times. I'm much more paranoid about that then how I look.

Oh don't worry about me, I am southern californian born, and a beach lover all my life! No-pool-swimming has to do with chlorine and hair color & snorkeling... well I just don't like it very much. I vacation once or twice a year at the beach in Mexico or Hawaii and LOVE the life. I just wanted to stand up for the other side, that if Belle wants to wear lipstick to the beach, well she won't be the only one!!!

Wear a good waterproof sunblock on your face that is made for faces. I always wear lipstick with at least a 15 SPF (red because I'm never without red lipstick) and I get blisters if I don't cover my lips. My hair gets slicked back in a bun with a good conditioner that also contains an SPF.

Don't forget your eyes and make sure you have good sunglasses.

TravelDiva, myself included, I have so many freinds who have a better body at late thirties through mid forties than they ever had in their twenties.

All it takes is continual diet and exercise particularly weight lifting.

OSB: Hubby and I are heading to Maui in 5 days for our 4th trip to that little slice of paradise. My best advice - skip makeup completely while you're in the water (pool or ocean). Be sure to slather on the sunscreen, for both your lips and your skin, and forget anything else. For all other activities, just the bare minimum to make yourself feel good is enough. Go lighter on everything - lipgloss instead of heavy lipstick, etc. The "natural" look is the only way to go on the islands, trust me. Enjoy!!!

Thanks for all the advice!
Here's the deal:
1) Allergies to multiple things, one being sunscreen! I have found a make-up with sunscreen that I can tolerate, so I will have to try to wear at least that on the face...the rest of the body can tolerate suncreen alittle better than the face. (I'm from the South, so I've had abit of experience with the hot sun0.
The thing I don't do alot is go swimming, snorkeling and then hop in the car and go check out a restaurant or shop without going through my little grooming ritual!

2) Hair is layered, less than shoulder length, so the clip and pony tail may not work for me, but I do have some clips, may try it again( looks alittle youngish for this over 50 gal).

3) The hat usually smooches my hair flat against my head,so you want to leave it put once it's there, kind or awkward indoors, but because of the sun factor, I think I may order one (with the string).

4) I work in the Healthcare profession, and the last thing I'd do is have permanent anything marked on my skin. ( Sis did and some others I know, but I don't like the appearance of it, nor the thought of it.) And, my job is to deal with the complications of such disasters, so no thanks!
I have, occassionally done the eyelash/brow dye and that does help alittle!

5) I've always been a cohort of beachkomer. But,I've often longed for the simplicity of no make-up!

6) Waterproof mascara: I do it everyday (since, with allergies, you never know when a tear is coming next!).

I REALLY enjoyed roxy's sense of humor, and Melisa5 was ...is the word comforting (in an odd sort of way!)

This thread just proved, us girls STILL like to talk make-up! Thanks! OSB.

OldSouthernBelle, Hi, regarding your allergy to sunscreen. Is it possible that you are allergic to paba which is in a lot of suncreens? I am.

My DIL found me Neutrogena, "Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunlock". SPf 30.
It does not have paba in the ingredients.

Her dermotoligist recommended it for her.

It is not greasy either.

Have a beautiful trip!

Conditioner for your hair-especially if it is color treated. A MUST!

I have very curly hair that frizzes easily and I was very suprised that my hair did not frizz in Hawaii! I also normally wear makeup daily, but when I was there I would wear only at night when "going out". During the day I wore sunscreen with a little mascara and a little lipgloss. That's it!

Stay away from maui alltogether! Maui is so ruined by the "maui revealed" book that the nice places it takes you to are destroyed. By the way, the local people wait at all these places for you so they can beat you up, and still everything you own. If they don't kill you, don't waste your breath with the local cops, their on the locall peoples side. I live on maui, I'm white, and I have nothing good to say about this place! There is NO Aloha here, everything you read, and see is a lie. So makeup or no makeup, your still going to hate it that you spent thousands of dollars to be treated the way you will be treated here in "paradise""

OldSouthernBelle, you'll have a great time in Maui. I was just there and the nice places mentioned in Maui Revealed and Fodors are as nice as ever.

We found most people looked happy and relaxed in Maui...could be all that sunshine year round.

Leave it to man, maui or otherwise, to feel the need to be a downer on a perfectly light-hearted thread.

I went to Maui for the first time 2 years ago, it is a lovely island. I didn't read the "Revealed" guidebooks but it's hard to believe one book RUINED an entire island.

Belle, have a great trip & I'll think of y'all as I apply lipstick for the beach next week in Honolulu!!

Ack, just ignore mauiman. Clearly, he doesn't know what he's talking about (or the difference between *their* and *they're* OR *your* and *you're*).

BTW - I'm in the group that wears lipstick everywhere - except to bed.

mauiman has either been hitting on the mushrooms grown in the cow paddies or smoking way too much pakalolo...
