Like RetiredVermonter and others here, I sympathize with the lobstermen (and other producers) who work hard and make little.

I just meant by the "chicken and beef" comment that when you look at how much chicken and beef cost per pound at the grocery store, versus how much a chicken or beef dinner costs at a restaurant, the "markup" can be close to (or sometimes even worse than?) the markup for a lobster dinner. But we are so used to chicken, beef, etc., that we don't stop to think about it.

Thanks for the article, cindyj, interesting. We did have the wine mentioned, Big Claw, and thought they defintiley succeed in that it was really good and went well with lobster. Only problem we had was finding it after we hade the first bottle in Georgetown Cove. Seeing that it had only been launched in July may explain that.

Same as most out-of-staters who love to visit Maine, we read about low lobster prices for the fisherman and have to fume over the high prices the restaurants and co-ops charge. Especially during the high tourist seasons.

Would love to see the fisherman get more involved in selling the (cooked) product to the public. I'd eat in a rusty tin shack that offered a $5-$6/lb. lobster. Don't know how to make this practical, however. Keep overhead real low, I guess.

Thanks for all the updates on lobster prices and who's offering what. Keep 'em coming as we enter the fall season.
