Excuse me but what is "dreadful" about bargain shopping, especially if you're from a place that doesn't have much of it? Franklin Mills is fun and worth the trip if you have the time.

Dan - - Thank you for your great posting. We residents can use all the morale boosters we can get. Our new mayor hasn't given us much of that lately. You helped me appreciate my own backyard again!

anon,

There is nothing 'dreadful' regarding bargain shopping. I was attempting to illustrate that if one is visiting Philadelphia, the city has much to offer in nearby locales. Most folks visiting (w/out) a car, would be hard-pressed to get to Franklin Mills.
Kenneth (Scotland) also mentioned the Zoo, which is a wonderful day trip.
If one loves a good bargain, definitely drive I-95 and head to Franklin Mills!

Hey there.

I'm glad to see that this thread is taking a life of its own.

Anon, I'm glad my posting helped you re-appreciate your city. I find so often in life people see "the grass as being greener on the other side" when in actuality the grass where they live has some truly unique wonderful things about it that the people on the other side covet.

Phila has a lot going in its favor; actually, so does Baltimore where I'm presently living. Phila is more expensive than Balto but not ridiculously so (like NYC, Boston and DC). Phila. just appeals to me more than Balto. to live in because of its greater vibrancy, efficient public transit, proximity to other urban centers and diversity (in every sense, museums, music, restaurants, cultural bckgds.). I've discovered that I'm miserable in the suburbs and most happy in a dynamic urban center, which limits my choices. True Boston, NYC and to a lesser extent DC have the above, but the rent in these three cities I find prohibitive. My only fear is by the time my contract is over here that Phila. will be too expensive.

Anyhow, to all who live in/visit Philly, enjoy...by the way www.gophila.com and www.philly.com web sites are great way to learn about special events. It seems there's always something going on. I'm already planning two trips for next month up there.

Dan

Dan,

You seem to have worked up quite a discussion here. I definitely recommend relocating to Philly - I enjoy living here a lot. But if you are going to do it, do it right. Don't move to the suburbs. As fabulous you think Septa is, it really isn't. It can be expensive (at least $90 a month!)and it can be unreliable at times. I lived in Manayunk for 4 years and commuted into the city every day. The more time I spent in the city, the more frustrated I got with the inconvenient commute. I just moved into the Rittenhouse area in July and am really enjoying it here. There is nothing like being able to walk out of your door and step into the hustle and bustle of the city - always something to see or do right at arms length. For your information, rent is definitely rising in Philly and is not as cheap as it once was. I am paying $850 for my place. It is a nice one bedroom, but it is much smaller and twice the rent of my 3 br house in Manayunk. Olde City will run you even more, depending on what you are looking for. If you are willing to live in a studio, those are a bit cheaper. The Art Museum area has become quite a popular place to live and is much cheaper - I have friends who pay around $800 for a really nice two BR; I would imagine a nice 1 BR would therefore run you around $600 or $700 - cheaper than the center of town. Another good thing about that area is that it is more car-friendly (but also not as accessible to Center city). Pick up a Philadelphia Weekly next time you are in town - that is the renter's "Bible".

Denise!

You seem like somebody who appreciates city life the same way I do, so I take your advice quite seriously. It's good to hear from somebody who actually lives in Center City. Your enthusiasm definitely chalks up a few more points in Philly's favor in my mind.

I hear you about the 'burbs not cutting it for someone like me...and you'll be glad to hear that I'm only considering Center City. Those prices you gave look pretty darn good, particularly when compared with other lively urban centers. I hadn't considered the Art Museum area; even though I walked there a few weeks ago (it really isn't THAT long a walk from Center City), I think I'd like to know if there's at least a regular bus from there.

Best regards, Dan.
