LV and Utah question

hi, i need some info on Vegas and
St. george, UT.

1. Which of the following hotels
in Vegas do you recommend for a family
of 4 (that is allergic to smoke & doesn't
gamble) and that is under $90 per night?
Ballys, Paris, Flamingo, Luxor and Treasure Island

We will stay in one of these hotels for
2 nights and then walk over to Mirage,
Luxor, Bellagio and Caesars to sightsee.

2. Did anyone take a shuttle to go
to St. George, UT, which I assume would
be a good base town to see Zion NP?
I read about a St. George shuttle, but
don't know how reputed/safe it is.

3. Does St. George get crowded in May?
And how is weather up there in May? Rain?
70s or 80s.
ALso any good hotels here?

Thank you

Haven't been to St. George. I have been to Zion though. I stayed in the town of Springdale. It is right at entrance to Zion. The hotel we stayed at is called the Bumbleberry Inn. Nice place. Nice pool. I believe it is a 3 star motel in the AAA tour book.

I think the Mirage has the nicest pool.

Assuming you have a driver's license renting a car might be the way to go. If a rental car is feasible Springdale would be a better place as a jumping off base for Zion. Further, with a car you have the option of visiting Bryce as well. Byrce is less than 100 miles from Zion and a must see if you are in the area.
I have no information on the St. George shuttle but I would think the cost for four might be comparable to the cost of a rental car. It bears checking out since a car would provide more flexibilitiy.

1) From time to time one can find room rates at all of the named hotels for < $90..All things being equal the Luxor will be the least expensive. If you are traveling with young children, then I would opt for Treasure Island or Luxor..otherwise I do not think it makes a big difference..Also, I have had some very good rates at the MGM Grand..If you stay at Treasure Island, be sure to take in Cirque du Soleil performance called Mystere...
2)I am certain that the shuttles from LAS to St. George are reliable. St. George is located 120-130 miles from LAS.Is a nice city with terrific weather.May should be dry and warm..probably in the 80's at least..and normally in May it will not be overly crowed..However, during the weekend of Spring break it is taken over college students..and you will not want to be anywhere near it..I would rather have a root canal without anesthesia than be in St. George during Spring break..There are several decent hotels/motels in St. George.
3) I would opt to rent a car, as it will also give you a lot more flexibility to not only see Zions,....but also Bryce, Cedar Breaks, Lake Powell...or any of the Red Rock country of Southern Utah..all of which are not
THAT far away from each other...

I loved St. George. One of my favorite hotels on our three week trip out west was in St. George--Best Western Abbey Inn. You can check it out www.bestwestern.com/ The room had a wet bar, fridge, micowave and a beautiful pool area with a gas grill. At this point in our vacation we were getting tired of eating out so ended up grilling steaks out on the patio. It was great!
Actually, I think they also had a deluxe breakfast buffet, free for guests. I would highly recommend staying there.

In Vegas, we stayed at the Monte Carlo for around $55/night midweek. We are not gamblers, but we loved the 5? pools. They have one of those "lazy river" pools that snake around and you can rent inner tubes and float the day away.

All of those casinos are good. I stayed at Treasure Island last year and paid $69 per night during the week. Make sure to watch their web site. Paris is on the newer side and will be hard to find deals on.

My recomendation is to get a rental car if at all possible. There is just too much to stop and look at in southern Utah.

After staying in Las Vegas I hit the road in my rental car. I stopped in St. George and took a hike in Snow Canyon State Park which is just outside town. There are a couple of nice easy trails.

I drove about 10 minutes and stayed in the small town of Hurricane at the Comfort Inn. If you're going and want to stay closer to Zion make reservations ASAP: I waited too long and that's why I had to stay there and not in Springdale.

Springdale is wonderful and does not have that overly touristy feel. No chain restaurants but pleanty of good places to eat. A welcome respite after LV. The couple of hotels meantioned by the other posters all looked to be very nice.

You'll want to double-check if you get a rental car, but at least last May you could drive into the park. After Memorial Day they use a shuttle bus system inside Zion which I heard works very well.

If your kids are about 10 or older make sure to do the Angel's Landing Trail in Zion. One of my best experiences on the trip: I cannot recommend it too much.

I was in the Zion area during the 2nd week May last year, and while there were a fair amount of people St. George and the other Southern Utah places I visited were not crowded.

The weather was fine when I was there. No rain. Cools to the 40's at night and gets to around 80 during the day.
