The Awahnee in Yosemite if you can get a room. Hands down. No contest.
Barring that - get one of the pricey lakeside rooms at the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village at Lake Tahoe. Or go to Big Sur - there are a couple of spectacular places outh of Carmel
Or go to the Montecito Inn or the Biltmore in Santa Barbara. I'd be happy at any of those!
One other thought - if it is late enough in October, go the the fancy resort in Death Valley - there are two places, across the road from each other. You'll be able to tell the differnce by the price! It is another world - with a plam tree oasis, beautiful hotel/dining room/lounges. Spectacular pool in a dramatic and spectacular setting. Never seen a room - but it is on our list of adult spluges for one of these days!

Absolutely agree with the Ahwanhee, but if it's in the end of October the weather starts to get cold--totally romantic place, however. The above poster is probably thinking of Ventana in Big Sur but very expensive. The Hyatt Regency Tahoe in Incline Village, NV, has honeymoor packages--maybe they'll do the same for 1st anniversary.

Wonderful idea for an anniversary celebration. You'd love Ventana Inn at Big Sur -- lodge-type accommodations spread out on hundreds of acres of meadow and forest with ocean views. High level of service, very romantic, open-to-the-sky Japanese baths, utterly special and gorgeous setting on the coastal mountains of Big Sur overlooking the Pacific.
Expensive yet delivers over and above the cost! October is perfect in Big Sur.

Off Hwy. 1 at Big Sur, 100 miles south of San Jose, 150 miles south of San Francisco.

Suggest if you're going to Ventana you fly into San Jose if at all possible. SFO is under construction and has the worse on time record of any airport in the U.S. San Jose is two small terminals and a joy. Even better if you don't check luggage. From San Jose airport turn left (east) on Guadalupe Pwky and then head south on 101 and you're on your way, having saved probably about an hour over SFO. Have fun.
