Luxe NYC

Planning a special weekend in NYC.I would appreciate suggestions for luxury hotels and great restaurants that would appeal to a couple in their 30's.

Thank you!

Multiple past threads on this. Can't really help on the hotels as I live here. Although, on our wedding night we had a great suite at the Peninsula which I'd certainly recommend. Good location, very service oriented and comfortable rooms.

For dinner, literally hundreds of great choices. Really depends on what your cost expectations are and the type of environment/food you are looking for.

Some I'd suggest at the very high end both in terms of formality and price are: Le Bernardin, Le Cirque and La Grenouille.

Less formal but great for food are: Nobu, Babbo, Gramercy Tavern, Gotham Bar & Grill, Union Square Cafe, Mesa Grill, plus numerous others.

My favorite hotel in NYC is the New York Palace. Splurge for an executive level room if you can. As for restaurants, the best, IMO, is the Union Square Cafe. Also quite good, and stylish, is Eleven Madison Park. It won the James Beard award for best service and the food is excellent.

There's all different levels of luxury ($300-over600/night) and not all 30 somethings like the same things. The W Union Square is a trendy upscale hotel in a trendy area. The Grammercy Tavern (not far from this hotel) is considered by many to be the top restaurant in the city.

The new Mandarin Oriental Hotel is located starting at the 35th floor of the new Time Warner building. Per Se, a new, terribly expensive restaurant in that building received a rave review here from another Fodor's poster (type the name in the text search box above to find the review).

The Gansevoort is another new trendy hotel that recently opened in the very trendy meatpacking district where there are lots of different restaurant choices.

Then there are many more traditional hotels/locations that would still be enjoyed by certain 39 somethings. The Ritz Carlton on Central Park South is very elegant with possible superb views of Central Park.

If you type luxury hotels in NYC in the text search I think you'll find some previous posts with discussions.

What are you able to spend nightly for hotel and room?

Fall is peak season and the lux hotels will start at $500 per night for a standard room.

If that is your limit, I would go with the best room in a lessor hotel than the cheapest room in the best hotel.

What kind of food? It is impossible for my husband and I to get out of Babbo for under $300.00.

Have heard great things about the Mandarin Oriental. But its now been in business long enought that I believe the intro specials are over - and I don;t know if they would still have anything in the $500 range.
