Lunch in NYC

My husband and I have a day layover before heading for Zurich. We are staying in Newark, but would like to go in to the city for lunch. No particular area, but would like a "light" menu selection as we are flying out first class (lucky us--lots of miles!) and expect a fine dinner on the plane. Any suggestions?

There are literally thousands of restaurants to choose from. At the very least give us an idea of price, type(s) of food and location(s) of restaurants.
(PS: Airplane fine dining is an oxymoron!)

Fine dining on a plane - surely you jest.

It's all just a little more upscale microwaved frozen dinners. I don;t think there's been any real food on planes for at least 10 or 12 years.

we have enjoyed the FCI, french culinary institute, called līecole.

it is near canal street area. you can google to get the website. sorry i donīt have the address near right now.

they have a fixed pice very nice lunch in nice ambience for $20.

we re-visited last month and it was worth putting it on our must-do list for next year.

and i donīt mean to be negative, but we were upgraded to"business plus" class last week on iberia, and i sure hope your airline has better food than they did. the food was quite a disappointment.
but the luxurious reclining seats were a salvation.

The Boathouse in Central Park would be wonderful for a light lunch, if you are traveling in September.

Thanks for the suggestions...
We flew first class on Lufthansa in April and definitely had fine dining--from the caviar to the cheese course and the eisswine (sp?). Everything was prepared to perfection and graciously served.

Yes, lincasanova. I think what you're missing is reading all the posts. In the first post roamer mentions they're expecting a fine dinner on the plane when they fly to Zurich. Several people indicate fine dining doesn't exist. Roamer came back to tell us he's flown before and DID have fine dining. I don't think that trip in April has anything to do with the upcoming trip, other than stating that he's hoping for fine food again.

Right, Patrick. We retired in January and are making our second trip to Europe this year--then we will be out of miles and out of money and have to stay home for awhile. April was Zurich, Lyon, Vaison-la-Romaine-Barcelona, Sarlat, and Paris--two months total.
Leaving tomorrow for Zurich, Budapest, Montepulciano, Fonterutoli, Lago Maggiore, and Venice--home November 1. Will try to post along the way....

Well, sweetie, I like Le Zie on 7th Ave at 20th Street. Very good Venetian food. They have a $12.95 prix-fixe lunch menu. Try the calamari & zucchini appetizer, tortelli with spinach, or spaghetti w/ tomato and bacon.

I liked Pastis, Max, Lupa - all around the "teens & 20's (Streets)". Good food, fun atmosphere & not the National Debt.
