Lost Luggage-track your bag with global positioning !

With all the horror stories about Lost Luggage, I saw something really neat today-a luggage tag that uses global positioning technology. It is only $15 and is made by a company called Swiss Army Soho 212-965-5714, it's called "Victorinox"...I thought you would get a kick out of that...

After spending some time searching (while contemplating an actual purchase), I discovered this user review page which tells more of the story:

The link above did not work for me. This one seems to work -http://www.ebags.com/victorinox_swiss_army/lifestyle_accessories_global_tracking_id_tag/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=14892#testimonialJump

So others don't waste time looking at this ... from the link provided by AAFrequentTraveler we find that this is NOT some sort of GPS device, but just a tag with a serial # on it and an 800 number to call. I thought $15 was too good to be true, but that concept is pretty good ... maybe a cell phone that called it's current position every "x" minutes after a certain time, allowing for no calls during the originally scheduled flights?

Uh - uh Wednesday...

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.
"I feel this item is a total misrepresentation. The implication of a "global tracking" tag is that it has some kind of a transmiter and they can somehow tell you where your bag is. In fact it is only the same old thing where if someone finds your lost bag, AND contacts them, they will call you. The name and description of this item promise more than you get. I bought them as gifts and was embarassed when it was pointed out to me that they were no more than what many firms provide at no charge."

wow, well, I just wrote verbatim what it said in "Real Simple" magazine. It gave no details other than what I wrote-sounded interesting though....

HERE IS EXACTLY WHAT IT SAID: Global Tracking ID tag...Victorinox, $15.."The last thing he needs to worry about is whether his bag flew to the same city he did. To ensure it can be tracked wherever it lands, give Dad this durable tag, which uses global positioning technology. Tell him to resist the urge to surgically implant one in his 16 year old daughter. To Order: Swiss Army Soho 212-965-5714......

I saw that as well in "Real Simple"... I researched it and wanted to write them a letter afterwards letting them know that perhaps they should spend the 10 minutes researching such items *before* publishing mis-information.

I can't figure out a magazine whose essential premise is: "Buy all this neat stuff and simplify your life"...

Thank you, Wednesday, for alerting us to the possibility that such a thing exists. I think the bottomline is that we have enough snoops here to figure these things out and which of us has not been duped before by advertising hype. So let's not jump all over Wednesday. As they say: Let the consumer beware. So, having received the alert and researched it (as a responsible consumer will do no matter what publication endorses it), we can get on with important (and I hope) fun things this lovely day has for us. Maybe one of us (having been given the idea) can put our engineering skills to work, consult with a patent attorney and announce at some future date that the real thing is available.

I can't wait for my Real Simple subscription to run out. Waste of paper and mail box space.
