No cell service here in Gualala, CA on the northern CA coast. The only people we ever see on cell phones are tourists desperately trying to get reception. They really stand out!

The user guide of all the phones I had show the location of the on/off switch, usually on the first page.

For those of you who don't understand why they can't just turn it off, thank you for listening to her plea about not turning this into a "just say no" thread. Seems you can't control your behavior either.

I have a physician aunt ( a Physiatrist) who never ceases to remind us of the importance of a good pair of shoes. Depending on your needs, you should always look for comfort...not so much on how it should look on your feet. If you are planning for a rather long walk in the mall or just a good stroll, consider what kind your feet are supposed to be...flat feet, the most common foot problem is also the most uncomfortable and bothersome. If you have flat feet then choose shoes that have a higher arch right where the middle palm of your feet rest. Since flat feet have no arch, then the arch in the shoes will make up for the absence. Also, flat footed people should choose shoes that have wedge heels where balance is almost always perfect and the weight of the body is evenly distributed. NEVER, as a rule, wear slippers, ballet shoes or anything that is flat. When the feet has no full support in the middle, weight is focused on entire feet and therefore, each step will almost always be painful after an hour or so of walking.

You were right; it will always point to a just-turn-off-that-thing! discussion and it is obvious it's not as simple as that for you. Being in business means you are a slave to a system where constant checking is a must. I suggest then, for the whole family to enjoy, and most especially you, why not leave behind a specific instruction that UNLESS its emergency, you are not supposed to be bothered. It would be a two-way process. You will be giving a well-deserved pat- in- the -back to a trustworthy employee by simply trusting him/her to do what has got to be done. What better bonus is there than the feeling of being an employee worthy of their employer's trust. At the same time, you get your well deserved vacation without the constant bother of cell phones ringing which is still turned on on by the way for emergency use.

Why can the OP not just use their phone LIKE a business center and check emails a couple of times a day? This is a little odd.

Yes, I agree. Sort of like "I really need to lose weight, so can anyone recommend a great vacation place with really bad food so I won't eat too much?" or how about, "I hate to sleep away a vacation, so can someone recommend a hotel with really uncomfortable beds?"

In other words, solutions for people who have absolutely no self-control.

Mountain, forest or high desert? Oregon has all of the above with only spotty cell service. Plan on driving into Bend and visiting the Deschutes County library to pick up your emails and answer your text messages etc.

I suspect it is a spouse of a person who will not turn the phone off, so she is looking for a place where she can get some peace and quite . .

I feel for her . .

Mount Desert Island, Maine (think Acadia National Park) has historically had very spotty coverage thanks to all those beautiful and unblemished mountains -- and the phone-tower-free ocean surrounding it.

Is it just me or does anyone else on this thread have any idea where the OP is going to be traveling FROM?

You want no service..head for the backwoods of northern Ontario..I just got back and I'm not convinced some of those wonderful folks have ever even seen a cell phone.

I have hesitated to join in here, but to me, I think she is saying that she wants to be able to truthfully tell the customers/clients that they will be unreachable where they are.

DH used to work w/an MD who did the same thing back in the (pre-historic) days when there was no cell service on Nantucket.
