Looking for someplace to stay completely different

Anybody can go to the beach or mountains and stay in a cabin or a hotel. I would like to know some places that are really different.

This past weekend my wife & two small children & I stayed in a cabin on a working farm near Hot Springs, NC. Hot Springs is a big stop-over spot for through hikers on the Appalachian Trail. The farm is listed on vrbo.com, look under Hot Springs, there are only a couple of properties there.

Go to one of the international home-exchange companies, and look up potential exchangers in obscure countries that have only 3 or 4 listings.

There are 2 ice hotels that I know of. Sounds like a great experience to me. One is in Sweden and the other is in Canada. Check out this website

In Oregon you can stay in a yurt at the beach or in a forest ranger tower in the mountains

How about a Habitat for Humanity housebuilding?

A multi-day bicycle or kayak tour?

A hostel stay?

I've not done the first, done several of the second, but most hostel stays were either part of bike tours, or a "Crash" pad while arriving late for early morning flights (LGA, and too early for public transit from Albany)

In June I am going to be staying on a remote island in Newfoundland in a lighthouse(not actually in the lighthouse, but in its attached building which is an inn). Quirpon Island Newfoundland.
