Looking for inexpensive, good Hawaiian food in Honolulu?

On weekdays, this plate lunch place is awesome: Da Hawaiian Stop.

It's a place you could stop at if you're touring Chinatown, Aloha Tower, Iolani Palace, Foster Gardens, etc. in the financial district. Just FYI. Although if you know me, I'd rather you came to Aloha Tower Marketplace!

I don't get down to Fort Street Mall very often, but will have to keep this place in mind. The Hawaiian plates look pretty good, thanks for the recommendation.

With all due respect to Melissa, Da Hawaiian Stop has a long way to go before being a recommendation for Hawaiian food.

Several of the dishes pictured are Mexican, not Hawaiian. Others, like the hot dog, are also not Hawaiian.

I recommend that you look to Helena's. This is a Beard award winner serving a far more varied offering of traditional Hawaiian foods.

Melissa, you must go there. The sisters remembered your father fondly.

I think the key phrase is "due respect."

Hahaha, sure it wasn't no respect, lol

One more vote in favor here! I just love Da Hawaiian Stop and their food is Hawaiian, Mexican and very local. Most foods are also made from scratch, not frozen

Aloha!

My daughter is leaving Sat. for a week in Honolulu with a friend and her family (lucky girl!) and I have written down this place for them to try, thanks! ***kim***

Where in the Aloha Tower Marketplace, Melissa? My wife and I will be in town for the Honolulu Marathon, and might just stop by and look you up.

beachbum, I'm doing the marathon, too! (God willing.) here are some discount coupons:

And here's what's going on that week:

Depending on what you're looking at, Chai's is always really nice. He offers live local entertainment nightly.

The other favorite, although a chain, is Gordon Biersch because it is waterfront. We also have Don Ho's Island Grill, but I am not sure how their food is lately because their chef has been a grouch (as most chefs are!) so I've stayed away!

How long will you be here?

Also if I may plug my blog:

Beachbum--Here is another vote for Gordon Biersch. We had a nice lunch there one afternoon. Sitting under the umbrellas outside, good food and drink, and looking out over the water. After that we got shave ice somewhere in the tower as well.

We arrive mid-day on Friday, and leave Tuesday afternoon, Melissa. If it wasn't bumping up against the holidays, we'd stay longer, but since we still have kids under our roof.....

I thought you might be doing the marathon. Another fodorite (Kahuna something? :-" ) clued me in that you'd done them in the past. I'm just tagging along with my wife, camera in tow, and umbrella drink in hand.

Thanks for the recommendations and links. No shame in plugging your blog!

And thanks for the second opinion on Gordon Biersch, mms. Ya know, it's not to late to register to run! ;-)
