John, I believe you are thinking of Greenport, not Greenpoint. Greenport is an alternative to Montauk only the north fork, high rent neighborhood and a good 2 hours from the city. Greenpoint is a Brooklyn neighborhood as Helen suggested. And I might add a very bad neighborhood. If the wedding is in Greenpoint, I'd suggest a hotel well away from it, perhaps in Flushing or even in Nassau Co.
On the other hand if Marcie really is going to Greenport, then a nice B&B in the Hamptons would be fantastic.

I guess we all have our own definitions of what constitutes a "bad area". My niece, among many artists who have been forced out of Manhatten lives in Greenpoint ,{ Brooklyn}.I found it to be a very interesting mix of Polish , Greenpoint IS Poland , and exiled artists.But I don't remember any hotels there. An easy subway ride from Manhatten if you are so inclined.

You could look into the Marriot in downtown Brooklyn, or a place like the Sheraton in downtown Flushing (at least I think those are the right chains.) There's also a place in Sunnyside (Queens,) which is right over the bridge from Greenpoint. I think it's a Best Western or a Quality Inn. Grim location overlooking the Long Island Expressway as it winds down into the Midtown Tunnel, but sure is convenient!
Another alternative would be to look for a B&B in Brooklyn, in one of the brownstone neighborhoods.
One final point, to John: don't forget, geographically speaking, Greenpoint IS on Long Island!

You are right about the Polish area, that's not at all as bad as the surrounding area. But from my experience there I thought that was Williamsburg, not Greenpoint. To explain, I had a customer there several years ago in the shipping industry. The city sanitation "transfer station" is right there, as is the bridge to Rikers. I would get off the Kos bridge and see 12 years flashing little white baggies at the motorists at the stop lights. This was in full view of the police across the street as they protected the construction crew working on the road. My client took me out to eat there in the Polish area where there were shops and felt a whole lot safer than under the bridge, but I thought we were south enough to be in Williamsburg.
Hotel recommendation is still Flushing ;-)
