stw, I'm not exactly sure what you mean...haven't been to or heard of Langham's. BUT...one really good place for sinful desserts is Max's on Van Ness (and several other locations in and around SF). Their hot fudge sundaes are pure bliss...the kind where they include an extra saucer of hot fudge along with your already-smothered sundae. And all their baked goods, the whole deal, is just over-the-top good fun.

Their motto, which is displayed at the front door as well as at the top of the menu, says it all:
"This is a bad place for a diet."

I have never been to Langham's either. I live vicariously through the metabolism of my 23 year old son, lol. I hear it is quite the treat.

After thinking about it, I think something like a GC to a Max-type place would be better. I know they have theater/ballet tickets, etc. and a more casual-type place would work better into their scheduling (lunch/dinner/or just dessert).

Not that it would matter much since they are pretty adept at getting around, but is one of those locations near Union Square area?

BTW, I'm dying here just thinking about that extra hot fudge sauce.

One last try. Any other ideas?

Ghirardelli Square (a fun, rather touristy place) has a chocolate shop there with their treats- there's also one downtown near Union Square I believe. Check out ghirardellisq.com and ghirardelli.com.

nvl325, I do love the Ghirardelli ice cream place in Ghirardelli Square (we used to go there often when our son was little) -- but for really put-you-in-your-grave-early desserts. I prefer Max's.

Perhaps Recchiuti Chocolates in the Ferry Building will have something like this? They have great chocolate.

There's a little magazine/candy store at 525 Market Street called Fog City News. They have a huge selection of gourmet chocolate from all over the world.

If this was my older son, no doubt he'd ask me for the Godiva chocolate cheesecake - just bought one at the Cheesecake factory for $25 small, they are on Macy's top floor right in the Union square.

So maybe the same for your son? He can also have food there, lunch or dinner. Great place. The only negative thing - no reservations, and as this place is extremely popular, the waiting can be long.

But even one slice is worth the waiting.

Look it up on the web, they have pictures of the cakes, and the menu is posted. Yum-yum (hello, Kal )

Try "Bittersweet" on Fillmore. It is a chocolate bar but does not serve panini or waffles.

Since they have ballet tickets I suggest you check out Hayes Street Grill or Zuni.(Hayes Street Grill is closer to the opera house). Both should have websites. Either would be a fabulous place for lunch or dinner. Reservations will be essential.

Nopa(Med style food near the GG Park Panhandle)

Blue Plate(In the Mission)

Greens(vegetarian at the waterfront by the GG Bridge-open for lunch and dinner-reservations!)

BUT Tartine Bakery(Bar Tartine) might be just the ticket! The food is fabulous and it's between The Castro and The Mission either of which will provide them with some great stuff to check out. Check the menu out on line as well.

You may not believe this...I [erroneously] encountered soap once or twice as a kid too.

Back to the night at the opera. I've been to Zuni a number of times and Hayes Street Grill and both are very good, but last trip we discovered PaulK, at the corner of Oak and Gough. We loved this place and has a very young, trendy neighborhood feel. The food has Syrian overtones, rather eclectic menu overall.
