Looking for fun towns to walk around & drink in
I'm in NJ & have been to all the big cities in the surrounding states (New York, Boston, Phila, Atlantic City, etc.) I'm looking for some fun towns to spend a weekend walking around in with friends while stopping periodically for cocktails & food. I've been to New Hope, PA too so I'd like to try something new. Recommendations for places in NJ, PA, DE, NY, CT, MA are welcome. Local crafts, art & neat shops would all be of interest. Thanks.

Northampton, MA is much smaller than the cities you have been to, but is a lot of fun. Great Food and places to hang out. Very artsy with a college feel. You can walk the central area in about 15 minutes.

I'm a Lewes DE fan. It's a neat ride over on the ferry, and you can go a half-dozen miles down the road to Rehoboth.
In Lewes, be sure to check out the Peninsula Gallery http://www.peninsula-gallery.com/. In Rehoboth, there's the Rehoboth Art League: http://www.rehobothartleague.org/ .
Those are (arguably) the high spots.

Depending on time of year, I would say Buffalo!
Elmwood Avenue has a mile-long section of unique shops, boutiques, cafés, antique shops, galleries, and restaurants! There are great little neighborhood bars and restaurants on Elmwood or just off the strip (and they all have good food. You could end your walk at the Albright Knox art gallery.
This section of Elmwood cuts through some wonderful neighborhoods with beautiful houses, including a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home.
There are other areas worth visiting, as well, if you're interested.

Provincetown, MA at the tip of Cape Cod would be the ultimate location for this type of weekend if you are willing to wait for warmer weather.
Commercial Street (a one-way, narrow pedestrian way) runs along the harbor for 3 miles and is virtually car-free.
It is loaded with bars, niteclubs, restaurants, unique shops, galleries, inns and B&B's as well as other attractions like Whale Watch boats, Pilgrim Monument etc. only a few blocks away.
You and your friends can shop, drink eat and otherwise enjoy yourselves without ever using your car.

Another vote for Northampton and/or Amherst. Very interesting area. Beautiful scenery, neat shops, lots of restaurants and bars. And several, if not all, of the five colleges in the area have museums.

If you are willing to drive a little further, Montreal is possibly the best city in all of North America for strolling around, stopping in a cafe, shopping, and dining - almost feels like Paris in some neighborhoods.

Dutchess County area of NY / Hudson River Valley has great historic sites, quaint villages, wineries, antique shops plus plenty of good restaurants (including those at the CIA in Poughkipsee. Not a far drive from NJ. We live in Union, NJ and did it as a day trip.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I've put them in front of the "committee" for review & consideration. We do Newport, RI every year & actually were there for a long weekend in Jan. to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday (she lives there year round). I appreciate everyone's helpfulness with this.
