My nephew used to live in the MIssion and commute by Caltrain to Redwood City, I think, that really gets old after a while. I gather you are thinking Mission Bay so you'd be within walking distance of a Caltrain station. Ok, but I imagine you're talking about 1.5 hrs total commute each way, given everything. I also don't think there is any chance you are going to get a 3 BR place in that area for $3-4K per month. Maybe a 1-2 BR for $4K.

Where Stu lives (and where I used to live) is not near Hillsdale - it's near Burlingame Avenue, much farther north and a completely different type of neighborhood (Hillsdale area is suburban cookie cutter, the area near Burlingame Avenue is charming, no two houses alike, also Burlingame Avenue is bustling with shops and restaurants and people).

In Mission Bay, you'll find very few 3 bedroom places at all, and as Christina said, for your price ($3-4,000 per month), you'll only find 1 bedroom. I checked Zillow - only two 3 bedroom places come up, one for $7,700 and one for $11,250 per month. I think you'll find you have to look outside the city limits.

Mission Bay will not only be expensive, and a long commute, but good luck with good school district. SF schools are a major reasons that people with children leave the City. You are looking at private schools costs.

DD lives in Redwood City and works at Stanford. It’s a cute little town. Expensive, as is everything out there.
San Mateo is attractive, too.

Thanks!

Great! I will definitely look in San Mateo. What’s the area code and cross streets?? I started browsing a little and obviously a 3 bd is looking more like 4-5K in most areas. I’m hoping to find something 3-4K now... considering it has most of what I’m looking for. Thanks! You are so helpful. I’ve also heard from my co workers at Stanford, that San Carlos, belmont, Mountain View Or Redwood City are all good options.

94401 is the area code close to downtown San Mateo which has lots of apts. Also, there are apts on El Camino Real close to where we live in area code 94402. This latter area is close to both downtown San Mateo & downtown Burlingame..

Commute is bad anywhere along 101 - which is a good reason to live near your work. 280 is not so bad. If you work close to a Caltrans station - you could take the train to work. San Carlos & Redwood City are nice in many areas - but not all areas in Redwood City. I don't know much about Mountain View or Belmont - which might indicated that those two cities are not as "alive" downtown as San Mateo, Burlingame, Redwood City, San Carlos, Palo Alto, or Menlo Park.

I also don't know much about Belmont (although I know there are some very nice residential areas), but downtown Mountain View is pretty vibrant, with a good selection of restaurants.

I has lunch at Mingalaba this past Tuesday. My brother had mistakenly gone to Rangoon Ruby a few years back when a pet-sitter had recommended "this great Burmese restaurant" but he went to the wrong one! Let's just say that they never went bacy to RR but have put Mingalaba on their return list.

When we lived in Burlingame (which we did for 26 years, up to late 2012), it was our "standard" for eat in and take out. Now that we live in the city, we eat there whenever we head down the Peninsula.

Standard suburb. Less expensive than Palo Alto, Los Altos and Burlingame. Nice downtown area.

Still searching

its so difficult to find a place! Now I’m looking at 4-5K. I love Portola Valley! But way way out of my price range how about Cupertino?? I didn’t think it would be this impossible! Some must haves are space and an attached garage... I want to move back to southern Cali LOL

An attached garage might be tough to find.

WOW! Are you serious? A one bedroom in Concord, not the best of area in the east bay about 40 minutes by Bart will go for around $2,000. If you find something in the areas you are looking at for the price you want, then let us all know.
