looking for Alaska websites
A co-worker is retiring in June, has always wanted to go to Alaska, and I'm trying to send off for mass quantities of literature on all types of Alaska travel for him. Thought it'd make a cute gift. I can and will research this on my own, but you guys could save me a bunch of "butt time" by giving me some websites where I can sign up to have travel literature mailed to me. Thanks so much.....

If you want a website that has a lot of information on Alaska, try the message board on icruise.com.
Although there's no literature per se, the message board has tons of good information.
We went to Alaska last year (your co-worker is going to absolutely love it) and the message board was invaluable.
Good luck!

The famous Iditarod Dog Sled race is running right now. Daily updates are fascinating reading with descriptions of life in the remote places on the trail to Nome. The Anchorage Daily News has a race special on their site as well.

www.cabelasiditarod.com
Cabela is the sporting goods outfit. There's some good pictures on this site. The Iditarod Air Force is a volunteer group of Alaskan pilots that work for the race. There's one story about them in the pre-race coverage. You can also get a book about their adventures. The two sites I mentioned will also provide you with links to many more. The best guide to travel is The Milepost, a very thick magazine you can find at newsstands/bookstores.

Linda: It's not Alaska, but go to www.arcticharvest.com . It's a great web site, located in Canada's Northwest Territories, that offers a wide selection of arctic-related food products. Musk ox, Inuit-style dried caribou meat, reindeer jerky and the like.

Thanks, all, for your kind help.....but what I'm really looking for is just sites that will allow me to have brochures, etc. mailed to me. An afterthought: is there a monthly "Alaska" magazine published that I could subscribe to for him? I know a lot of states have them.....

But Linda, if you will visit the website for Anchorage Daily News www.adn.com you will find many links for visitor information which can be mailed or emailed. This includes information on hotels and adventure packages. I've seen Alaska magazine on some newsstands but the Milepost is the one you want for planning a trip. It's published annually and is considered 'the bible' for travel in Alaska. If your friend doesn't have it already, if would make a wonderful gift.

I'm in the early stages of planning my summer trip to Alaska, and can second the recommendations for the sites which Tracey mentioned.
My best discovery so far has been http://alaska-bike-rentals.com Even if you're not a bicyclist, the list of links posted on that site is one of the best I've seen, without those nasty advertisements and pop-ups that appear on so many of the other sites.
