Hi Angie:
You might want to consider the Holualoa Inn; it's gorgeous, private, and romantic.

It's in a lovely upland location in the funky little village of Holualoa. Kailua-Kona is just down the winding, scenic road.
As far as weather, there are no guarantees! The last two winters have been unusually dry all over the state, even at mauka locations.
Have fun planning!
Aloha,
k

The best snorkeling is next to the City of Refuge south of Kona. Just watch for the residents, they can be cranky. There's one guy who drives his big black car right onto the tiny beach! If you say anything, he gets into an alcoholic argument with you!

The water will be rougher but the temperature will not be much cooler. Other than Hapuna Beach on the Kohala coast the Big Island is not known for its calm, sandy beaches.
The most romantic place to stay is the Kona Village Resort. Check the web site. We have been going annually for 12 years...bliss!
