Long or Short route from San Fran to Yosemite

Should we take the 8 hour 40mins scenic route from San Fran to Yosemite, taking in lake Tahoe or should we just shoot through the borin way in 3 hours 20 mins and spend the extra time in Yosemite?
Cheers Al

what time of year?

If you were to begin at or before dawn to arrive at Tahoe and have some time to enjoy, then "maybe". Assuming you're a bit like me and enjoy driving and have a great car for this..."yes". Your time of arrival at Yosemite also makes a difference. Are you staying in Y.Valley? Or, are you continuing on to another location?

The last week of August into Labor Day are the busiest time of the year (except maybe over July 4th) at both Tahoe and Yosemite

The traffic on winding hwy 50 to Tahoe will likely be pretty bad. Count on it taking substantially longer to do the loop. Even I-80 to the north end of the Lake will be congested even tho' it is a multi-lane freeway - and it gets you to the opposite end of Tahoe so you'd have to wend your way all the way around the Lake before heading down to Yosemite.

I'd skip and detours that time of year . . . .

Oh I agree, Labor Day weekend IMHO is awful on 1-80 and also 50. Not a pleasure at all. 1-80 cuts through the city I live in and sometimes 1-80 can look like a parking lot. Suppose if you really wanted to go to Tahoe make reservations there in advance and spend the night there and than leave for Yosemite the next day.

I agree with all of the above responses. I would add that in August you should probably plan on it taking at least 4 hours to go directly to Yosemite.

No, the 24th of August in not Labor Day Weekend. That does make a difference. But, if the 24th of August if a Friday (don't have a 2005 calendar in front of me) do be aware going from SF to Tahoe anytime after 12:00 noon on a Friday can become quite a traffic jam.

I think what I don't understand is this.

Do you want to see and be at Lake Tahoe?

Or do you really just want to enjoy Yosemite? If Yosemite is your main focus than IMHO I would take the short route to Yosemite.

The thing is, i've got this highly detailed road atlas in front of me and the roads up through Sacramento and then on up highway 80 to lake Tahoe and then back south/west via highway 4 or 108 look so much more interesting than the short route.
We both love driving and want to see some sites.
What we want to know is, is it worth it?
This is are Honeymoon and once in a lifetime trip so barring crazy trafficI'd like to go for it.
Cheers

Well I have lived here all my life and it wouldn't appeal to me.

But than again, you are not really answering posters questions so don't know how you can except posters to give you advise.

TripleSecDelay asked you a question, I asked you a question, no answer from you on your last post.

Looking at an atlas and being on the road is two different things.

Whatever you decide to do I wish you a great trip.
