Hi, further to my previous posts we are pretty set now on our trip. As our first couple of nights in our RV are on Long Island, what are the pro's and cons re driving 'round' or taking the Cross Sound Ferry from LI to Connecticut? According to google (so it must be true ) it will cost about $100usd and save approximately 30-40 minutes, to take the ferry.

The overall time depends upon where you are starting from. The drive in an RV will be on interstates with bridges and tolls, subject to congested driving at many times of the day. The ferry would be nicer.

Oh, make sure the ferry takes RV's. Will you need a reservation for that?

Take the ferry from Orient Point. You will take the slow ferry, that takes cars and trucks. Book ahead and make sure to leave some time to find parking in the Orient ferry lot. Parking is free but gets busy in peak months.

It's nice to have lunch or snacks on the boat. There is a snack bar at the parking lot but you are MUCH better off stopping before the ferry to pick some sandwiches. You have a few options for that, but the best place, by far, is the ORIENT COUNTRY STORE,, in the historic hamlet of Orient, about 8 miles before Orient Point and the ferry. The store is a slice of Americana that you might find interesting, and their food is excellent. They also have sodas, beer, and ice cream; no wine. They are locally famous for their desserts. It is about a half mile off the main road leading to the ferry.

Between the turnoff for the Country Store and the ferry, you will pass 2 farmstands....the first is OYSTERPONDS FARM, renowned for their berries in season. Open limited days and hours during berry season. If you know the time of your ferry and plan a stop for the berries, you should reserve ahead online, so you are assured they will not run out, as they often do.

Also open limited days is I AND ME FARM. They often have excellent pastries, espresso, and organic vegetables; but for the ferry, look at the breads and pastries. They are the last stand before the ferry.

If you are hungry when you leave the ferry, I can suggest Paul’s Pasta Which is directly across the river in Groton. Google for directions, in warm weather you can eat out on the back porch and watch the ferries and an occasional submarine go by.

The submarine museum in Groton is closed every Tuesday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. otherwise it is open. You can take a self -guided tour of the Nautilis. the world's first Nuclear powered submarine.
