Lodging in Pittsfield
Looks probable we will be visiting Pittsfield the first full week in Aug.Checking hotel and motel rates they look like NYC. Are they really that busy? Would also like what attractions are nearby. Thanks

I would assume you checked the Crown Plaza as its just about the only hotel in Pittsfield. Check the surrounding towns -Lenox, Williamstown, etc.
The Days Inn in Lenox is showing rates of $95 per night. Far from luxurious but a great central location.
That is heavy tourist season so rates will be high. Why are you going there?
Things to See
Walk around Main St, Stockbridge
Norman Rockwell Museum
Tanglewood (summer home of Boston Symphony Orchestra)
Definitely go to Williamstown and walk around.
Mass MOCA Museum
See if there is a play at the Colonial Theatre.

Mention of the Crowne Plaza brings so many memories. That hotel dates way back and has been under all sorts of flags. It was a Hilton most of the time I was growing up...and where we had our ballroom dancing classes and Cotillion back in its heyday. It's been up, it's been down, it is what it is...the only hotel downtown.
If I were you, I'd try to stay in some of the area tchoiniere mentioned--Lenox, Stockbridge, Williamstown, Great Barrington. More character. The area is so small you are never far from any of these towns staying anywhere within the county.
There is GREAT summer theater in Williamstown too, and dance at Jacobs Pillow in Becket.

If you are staying more than just a few nights, did you look into a cottage or house rental on www.VRBO.com
Also, try www.bbonline.com as many B&Bs have adjoining or family rooms.

You may want to try this link. They are condos. We stayed there a few years ago.
