Lodging in Jackson Hole
I am traveling to Jackson Hole this winter and would like suggestions for lodging. Also, I am confused about what the difference is between Jackson Hole, Jackson and Teton Village. We want to stay near the ski areas, but there doesn't seem to be much available there in the way of lodging.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mary,
Prior to our vacation in Jackson (that's what locals call Jackson Hole), I was also confused. Thus, Jackson/Jackson Hole are "one and the same". Teton Village is located approx. 15 minutes outside "downtown" Jackson (an easy drive). We vacationed the end of August '99 and stayed at Wildflower Inn. If returning to Jackson, we would stay there again.
If traveling with teens/children, our friends like Spring Creek (Lodge?).
There are many lovely places to stay.
If you posted your budget, perhaps you'll get a better response.

Yes, there is construction going on at Teton Village but there are lots of choices in lodging. Don't know what the plans are for the winter season and the building so you should ask when you call. In addition to Teton Village, there is also a fine little ski area on the Idaho side of the mountains - called Targhee, in Alta, WY which we actually like a lot. It's more friendly and smaller than the cliffs of JH. They have a website and lodging onsite. The best resource for all lodging in the area (including Targhee) is available from Jackson Hole Central Reservations. Their website is JacksonHole.com.
It's a fabulous place so enjoy!

Mary,
Teton Village was not to our liking (did much research prior to our vacation). While we're not skiers, you may want to check out Wildflower Inn, located outside Jackson and close to Teton Village. The owners are "ski saavy".

Jackson is the name of the town. Jackson Hole is the name of the valley that the town is in. (hole = deep valley in Western lingo of the past - and no, we don't want to hear any less-than-polite observations on the subject).
I once stayed in Teton Village in the summer for a large family reunion - it was OK - the place we stayed in was strictly ski-condo ambience - not really my thing, but since you're going there to ski, maybe it is yours.

The Alpenhoff is one of the oldest places at Teton Village. Staying at Teton Village is fine if you're young and only interested in skiing/snowboarding and drinking (there are many bars/restaurants there that cater to the young skiers). Personally, I find Teton Village depressing. It has a fake Alpine Village kinda thing going on. Yes, it's where all the great ski runs are, but I don't want to stay there. I'd stay at either the Spring Creek or at the Rusty Parrot. Both are very nice, upscale places. To me it makes it a more pleasant trip to stay at a place like that (budget permitting.)

Diane - People do not think the olympics are in Wyoming. Everything is so booked around Salt Lake City that people are booking farther and farther away. Jackson Hole is 5 hours from there. Supposedly a bunch (a large bunch) of executives from the Olympics booked the whole place (Teton Pines).
