lodging and timing in Newport, RI
We are going to Newport, RI, Saturday 7/26 until Monday 7/28. This is a very spur of the moment trip and therefore there are very few available places to stay. The Yankee Peddler has room and I was wondering if anyone who has stayed there could give me some information. Also are we crazy to go for such a short amount of time? We will arrive in Newport around 1:00pm on Saturday and will be leaving around 6:00pm on Monday. Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Marie

Marie,
We just visited Newport the week of the 4th, and I think you will have enough time to see the major sites within Newport. We arrived late (6-7pm) on Sunday and left early Wednesday, and quite frankly, if the hotel would have allowed us to do so without penalty, we would have left on Tuesday. In that time, we saw three mansions, walked Thames St./America's Cup Ave., did a drive to the Fort and Castle Hill Inn along Ocean Ave. and did a separate bike ride parking out along Ocean Drive and biking from Castle Hill into town to the mansions and back, and we parked at Easton Beach, did the entire Cliff Walk and ran back to the beach, plus other driving excursions. As for the Yankee Peddler, I can't tell you about it. We stayed at the Hyatt on Goat Island which was centrally located enough to everything for us.

You'll have plenty of time to see Newport - you really only need a full day and one night. I can't tell you too much about hotels since I've always lived fairly close so I never need one. However, you may want to check out motels in Middletown if you can't find anything right in Newport.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice. Now that I know we will have enough time, I am really excited about going to Newport. I would like to find out some info about the Yankee Peddler, so if anyone has stayed there please let me know.
Thanks again - Marie

I stayed at the Yankee Peddler a couple of months ago. At the off season it was reasonably priced. It is well-located, 5 minutes walk to downtown shops and restaurants. The rooms are comfortable and simple, maybe slightly on the tacky side, but not unpleasant by any means. The room and bathroom sizes vary, so if you're not happy with the one you get, you many want to see what else they have or request a larger room. The first room they gave us had the bathroom in the hallway as opposed to attached to the room.
A short trip will do for your first time in town.

put your sneakers or hiking boots on and walk the whole cliffwalk, take water, it is a good hike and then walk the streets back and explore at least one mansion. Marble house and the breaker.
Try Asterisk or Sardellas, and stop by the Cliff House for a cocktail and watch the boats go by on your adirondack chair

Thank you all for your help and information. I am feeling beter now about the Yankee Peddler. Since we made the reservations so late, the Yankee Peddler was the only place that had available rooms in Newport.
Guppielou, thanks for the info on the cliff walk. We really wanted to do the entire walk, but I had thought we would have to walk back the same way, I didn't realize you could walk back via the streets.
I really want to thank everyone who responded. I have never used this board before and am so pleased at how friendly and helpful people are.
Thanks - Marie

Good time to come to Newport. The weekend is supposed to be sunny and warm! If you like the beach, it will be great at Second Beach in Middletown this weekend. The Cliff Walk should be very good this weekend- nor rain forecasted. Good luck Marie!
